I have a cute little fake black "stove" that is really a Fan blown electric space heater. It has 4 switches: Its 750 or 1500 Watts (2 switches). Plus the Fan switch and a switch that turns on a light that is suppose to make the fake fire look real. I love it as I have a tiny house and it's like my own little fireplace! It started to give off a funny smell the other day, and zip...it fried I guess. The only switch that works is the light(FIRE) switch. Now, the heater parts never worked unless the blower(fan switch) was also "on". Now there is no fan and neither 750 or 1500 works. Can I take the back off and try to fix it? I know nothing about electric heaters, but have a few basic repair skills. New they sell for about $180.00. I cant afford a new one. This one is about 18 months old. Thanks.

Usually the problem will be the thermostat...the new space heaters sold these days have thermostats that will not hold up...when they burn the contacts off they give off a very odd odor then nothing works anymore not even the light that shows it is turned on...if it is a thermostat it can be fixed for less than half the price of a new one...i have fixed a few myself ....any good electrical repair shop should be able to fix this....

See if there are fix it places in your area that are run by charities. In this area they have ones run by senior centers in which the repair people include retired electricians. Those centers charge for parts and hope for a donation to cover costs for people who can't afford that much. If you can't find one try tking the bavk off and look for something obviously wrong that your skills can handle. An example would be a burnt area and open wires near the fan switch. If you don't think you can safely replace those parts you need to look for a replacement heater. See if you can find anything on freecycle.org that is being given away.

Take it apart and see if there is something obvious, like just fried wires or something. If its a part that looks fried, try to get a new part from the manufacturer. Last, call a few appliance repair shops and see if they can repair it.
