Should I buy compost or mess around with it myself?

We are starting a veggie garden to feed our small family fresh natural vegetable. I'm not into being dirty and don't have much time to mess around with anything that needs regular care. My hubby will help with garden but he will not touch compost.

I see people abscessed with making own compost? Why wouldn't I just buy it? What are the benefits of self-made compost?

I just checked out a book from the library and the last person who had it was a smoker. It smells so bad. What can I do to get rid of the smell?

supplier says gaps are to allow for expansion. Yet some boards are tightly packed together while other boards have noticeable gaps. No expansion left at skirting. The noise from the floor when walked on is unelievable - enough to waken children. Supplier says this is caused by seasons and climatic change and rustic nature of boards! We are able to move some of the boards at skirting by pushing them. When we checked laying instructions there should be min 20-30cm stepping between boards , most of our boards don't have this. Supplier says he can also feel sub floor moving through boards but this was never picked up at survey stage. Any suggestions would be really helpful.

Can anyone help me. The builders claim the new roof fitted is to building regs I cant find anything on the net surely the ovrflow pipes should be outside of the building. If it should overflow it will take down the new ceiling and ruin the flooring we have just had laid. I am a bit green on this stuff and would appreciate any comments thank you

Our girl scout troop is about to work on a badge involving plants and I am clueless. I need something extremely simple because the idea is to send each girl home with her plant and have them track the growth every few days on a chart. Then she would bring her plant back to our next meeting in 2 weeks.

We were going to place lima beans and wet paper towels in a plastic baggie taped to a window, but then I read that you can't use lima beans from a bag in the store because they have been treated with something to prevent growth. So, now I am stumped! Is there anything else we can use (potatoe, other beans, etc) that is inexpensive and easy to use in place of the lima bean?

Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
