We have septic, and we are smelling sewer in our basement. When looking at the top of the roof, I notice that the exhaust pipe is blocked by ice. Since there is snow on the roof, it is impossible to climb up there and remove. Lately it has been well below zero, and in part might be the problem. Do I have to wait until it warms up, or is there something I can do?

The best area for me to put a vent for my dryer is through my roof rather than the normal place, out the side of your house. Will this ruin my roof at all and what about snow, etc. getting into it?

Are dimmer switches supposed to heat up when they are on? The old one got really hot and so we got a new one, but it is doing the same thing. The switch is for a chandelier, it is a 15 amp switch and there are about 24 bulbs. We have not been up to check the watts of the bulbs but we are thinking about 25 watts each.
Would the problem be in the wiring from the light to the wall switch, the watts of the bulbs or the amps of the switch?

i live in a trailer. somewhere under the trailer my water pipes have frozen i have checked my heat wrap and it is working. i have opened all the cupboards in my trailer to allow heat to get to the pipes on the inside hoping to warm them. i have also put a small space heater under the trailer next to the area the main pipes are located and nothing is working. i live on a very meager income and very fearful that the will bust. if this happens i have no money left over after paying the bills to lives here to fix them. so if some could please tell me what to besides what i am doing. would greatly appreicate it.

I'm renting a 30-year-old house without a ground wire for the outlet. My new dryer has a ground wire, but I can't hook a 4-prong outlet into the wall, so the 3-prong cord I need to use has nothing to put with the dryer's ground wire.

The roofer says to replace the ridge vent because it was improperly installed, by the builder, and that they left the nails uncovered Also he recommended to take out one panel board (inside the attic which is covered by blackrot from the ridge vent to the soffits. The insurance company says Im covered.

However we've just had another snowstorm (BEFORE the roofers began the replacement) and now i see a sheet of ice which covers EVERY BOARD INSIDE MY ATTIC ON ONE SIDE OF THE HOUSE FROM THE RIDGE VENTS TO THE SOFFITS.

Is just replacing the ridge vent alone going to solve my problem now? Don't I need new shingles or panel boards (since the boards are covered with a sheet of ice???)

I was told that it can be done over a subfloor. I was also told that the subfloor should be made up of 6 mil plastic first, then plywood nailed into the concrete, then felt paper, then hardwood. Is this the proper method?

I am buying a house and the toilet was spray painted (graffity) and I was wondering if I can paint it (decorative) with some sort of waterproof paint or something for ceramic, any suggestions? Does it work? It would be nice to match it to my decoration.

Water seems to come into our garage during heavy rains and when snow is melting. It is not a lot, but enough to form pools of shallow water about 1 foot into the garage. It does not appear as though the driveway is slanted toward the garage and our house is built into a hill. The garage doors themselves are 13 years old. Is there anything we can do to prevent the water from leaking in? Is this a big deal?

I think my wife left a load of towels in our washing machine too long one day, and ever since they smell horrible. What can we do to get the smell out? Basically mildew is the issue, but we've washed them many times since and they still smell really bad.

Someone suggested color-safe bleach, but I'm not sure. I also thought about Oxy Clean. I'm about to just throw them out and get new ones.

I just recently installed an electrical outlet. Everything works fine on the outlet. I connected the Black and White wire according to the diagram, and even connected the third ground wire as specified. I just noticed that when I plug my surge protector in that is connected to my entertainment system that I get a spark that seems out of the ordinary. I tried plugging in a lamp that was on, and did not get any spark at all. The surge protector only sparks when everything is on. Is this a problem with the installation of my new outlet, or is this a problem with my surge protector? The only reason I ask is because my little brother likes to play with this cord sometimes, and I'm worried the sparks could be lethal.

Hi,
In my bathtub, I replaced moen valve 1222 thinking that this would be the problem of not having water coming out of the shower.
For my surprise, I still don't have water, however when the valve is removed, there is water coming out. A few drops occur with the valve installed.
please provide me your feedback if you know what is going on.
thansk,

Hi,

In building our new home, we are now looking at insulation. We have been told by everyone around us that insulation is the key, if we want an energy efficient home.

My question is, can you have too much insulation? We are based in Wales, UK, so I realise that we are not exactly blessed with the weather but I also don't want to live in a sauna by going over the top with the insulation!

I know we are going to have insulation in the roof/cavity and double glazing everywhere but can you ever over heat a house this way?

Also, does anyone have any experience of using bamboo flooring? Is it harder to put down that other wood flooring or has anyone had any problems with it after a period of time.

Thanks!
