We have enough money to pay off our 30 year morgage ( 29 years left) and a little money left in the bank. We were going to put it in our retirement fund, but think it might be better to pay off the house. Anyone know if it would be benificial one way or the other (tax wise etc)

I have a baytree and it has scale insects sucking on it. I dont want to use a systemic insecticide as I cook with the leaves. It also gets small green catterpillars (inchworms) that eat the young leaves and stick them together all year.

I have beautiful refinished wood floors on my rental house that I am thinking of covering with new carpet. Does anyone have any opinion on if this is a good idea or not? The heater is loud due to the echoing on the wood so I thought this might help and also make the bedrooms cosier. But I would do it only if I could improve the house and charge higher rent. To what extent do you think this would improve the livibility of the house/bedrooms?

How do you know which circuit breakers are out? Electricity went out in kitchen. Lights work, but outlets do not.. What should I do? 1/2 the outlets in the house don't work anymore. Is this self fixable or do I need an electrician? We had just bought a little conventional oven for the kitchen so we can bake chicken. Today I had some chicken baking in the little oven and when I came back to check up on it, it was off. I noticed that our rice cooker wasn't powered on either, come to find out, none of the appliances that required power outlets were not working. Including the refridgerator!!! In our other rooms, everything works fine, the outlets are working. It's just the ones in the kitchen, does anyone know what happened?? And what should I do to fix this? Is it something with the circuit breaker? We turned it off and turned it back on but its still not working. I reset and tested all the outlets, but nothing is working. In the electrical panel, how would you know which breaker is out?

New handyman project involves putting ceramic tile on bathroom walls. Never tried this before. Any tips or suggestions? What about a web site with do it yourself directions?

I put a coat of urethane on a previously coated wooden bar. I had no knowledge of the type of material that had been used on it before, but prepped the surface well and applied the urethane. Now it's peeling in places and has small bubbles popping up here and there. I've used varnish before and after using the urethane I'd rather go back to varnish. So if I was to re-finish this again, without totally stripping it down....what should I use?

We are in a rental home which had central heat and air installed this past summer. This is the first time we have turned on the heat and the smoke alarms keep going off. Is this something to worry about or is this normal? (I know it sounds like a really stupid question, but I grew up in the Tropics, so I don't know how the heating works!)

Hello all,

Trying to get an idea how much a new carpet will cost... including fitting. I have no idea about carpet, but would probably choose midpriced stuff (not cheap/not high end).

The amount of carpet I need is... enough to cover a normal staircase and 3 square metres in the hall (that's 2mx1m + 1mx1m, not 3x3).

Does anyone have any idea?
Thanks
