Getting granite countertops installed in a house I am building and I have been asked to select the slab from which they will make the countertops. What the heck do I look for? ie I don't want to show up and say "Hey that one looks good!" What makes a slab "good" or "bad"?

I'm renovating a house that has sat vacant for at least a year, most likely longer. There is a gorgeous stone hearth in front of the fireplace. The dust and mouse turds cleaned right up and scrubbing with some Simple Green and a nylon brush made most of it look like new. Except for one section, where it appears someone drew on the stone with maybe crayon maybe magic marker maybe something else. Is this hopelessly stained or is there something that can lift the color out?

I'm going to move 500 miles. What's the best way to find a place to live in this situation? I'm not looking for a roommate situation this time, so that might make it slightly harder, having to sign a lease.

I'll be changing jobs as well since my company doesn't have an office there. Should I ask for extra time before starting my new job, so that I can go there, search for apartments, then come back and move my stuff? Or should I move there into a temporary housing so I can look from there? I have furniture and stuff that I'd like to bring, not a whole apartment but basically a bedroom + odds and ends.

My driveway has an inbedded mesh that is heated by electricity. I want to keep the heater capablity for snow days. So I would like to add a layer of concrete rather than dig it up. There are a few minor cracks. Driveway is steep. I can see a piece of black plastic peaking through a crack ( about 2" long x 1/8" crack) . The concrete is greater than 4" thick.

I want to change the kitchen floor, and I was wondering what is the less costly yet best looking idea for the floor: I just moved and it now looks like it has a one-sheet fake vinyl covering, but I want to change it for tile-looking design.
Also, would you use the same idea for the bathroom? This one looks to be tiles, but not not ceramic.

You are in a cold house in the winter. It is dark. You have one match. There is a candle and there is a wood burning stove. Which do you light first?
