minimum 506.25
if the area is square
30 ft X 30 ft=900 sq ft
30 ft=360 inches
360 / 16=22.5 squares per side
22.5 X 22.5 =506.25

About 507, plus an extra 10% for the fact that some tiles will crack when installed, and you will need to cut some if the room is not square or you have obstructions to tile around. So allow for the 10% extra and keep the receipt -- because you can always return the excess. (for me though, I always kept a few extra tiles in case a tile became broken over the years -- that way I could easily replace the broken tile).

16 x 16 = 256 square inches
12 inches = 1 foot
1sq foot is 144 square inches
900 square feet is 900 x 144 = 129600 sq inches.
129600 divide by 256 = 506.25
then the answer is 507 tiles

well this all depends on how much sq are in each box of tiles. 30'x30' = 900sq ft. the average box of tile would have about 12sq/ft in it. so go 900 into 12 = 75 boxes of tile. remember you always get more than you need, the home depot always takes singles back. you will make mistakes and break one or two so get extra.

Alfred is correct on the minimum. Depending on the dimensions of the room and the finished look you desire would dictate how many extra tiles you would need.
Example: if the room were 20 by 45
15 tiles would be perfect across 20 in one row
and there would be 33.75 rows
15 x 34 = 510 tiles would make for a nice finish.

you'll need about 556 tiles. You can enter the dimensions of the space you want to tile here and get good results.
