Alternative Medicine - February 2007

[Selected]: All categories Health Alternative Medicine

Indeed, western medicine can be risky. But alternative medicines are not usually backed by any kind of science. Which is not to say that science does not study nature and plants in relation to human health. Aspirin was discovered in the bark of a type of tree.

But with such concrete science backing western medicine and next to no science behind alternative medicine, why should I believe it's effective?

What;s the best medicine that you have tried that will clear up severe cold symptoms like, stuffy nose, chest congestion and stuffy head. What have you tried that really works? I am using Thereaflu night time right now, but it hasnt seem to really do anything but help me sleep. What do you suggest? Any relief will help.

I just found out that I am pregnant, a week over due.
I would like to know if any of you out there know of a good herbal remedy. I know that black and blue Cohosh, Penny Royal, & Slippery Elm Bark are some of the herbs that help with that kind of thing, but how much to take for how long? Any other remedies you know of? I dont want to do anything drastic, just a little nudge to possibly get nature to change it's mind.

I have horrible anixety and have taken two Xanax's. However, I just want to sleep right now, can I take Valerian in addition? It's an over the counter "vitamin" for healthy sleep and relaxation.
Thank you.

I developed allergies to cats and dust a couple years ago (I am 36). I have heard that getting it later on in life is worse than having it from birth. It is destroying my life - if I don't take an allergy pill each day I sneeze uncontrollably. Nasal steriods take away my abilit to smell/taste. I am considering acupunture.

Has anyone had any experience with accupunture curing their allergies, and how long did it take to work?

If you put your vitamins in vinegar and they desolve fairly quickly... they are good vitamins. Is that true?

I am a student of Chinese Medicine. I have found that my textbooks are lacking in description of proper use of electrostimulation acupuncture (when to use which frequencies, intensities, etc.). Are there any acupuncturists who could recommend a good source of information for this?

I get motion sickness on carnival rides. Not the big rollar coaster, but more so on the small spiny rides. If I would take dramamine, would it help me to not get motion sickness on the rides? Thanks!

I have osteoarthritis in the left hip due to hip displaysia. I'm only 37. My dr says that I just need to basically manage the pain and put off hip replacement for as long as possible. I am very active. I work out (limited due to the arthritis), do yoga and am looking for relief other than the celebrex. Has acupuncture worked for anyone? I'm also looking into some supplements.

Just out of curiousity which one of these drugs is the safest to be addicted to long-term - Anbien (sleeping pill) or Heroin? - obviously neither is safe but which is the safest? I did some research on both of them and it's shocking how Anbien seems to be the worse drug with the worse effects, when anbien is the legal drug and heroin is the illegal drug.
I know that with anbien you build up a tolerance towards it after around 2 weeks, cause it's only meant for a short term answer to a sleeping problem. Say someone HAD to take a drug to sleep, I know there is always a way around it, but let's just say there wasn't and they HAD to; isn't heroin the safest drug, since the long term effects of heroin compared to a sleeping pill are much much less, and because of this, why is heroin illegal if it is safer in general than any sleeping pill?
