Some of the other respondents have mentioned melatonin as a good idea if you want to get to sleep. On its own, it's fine. HOWEVER, my mother took a combination of valerian and melatonin, and had a near-psychotic reaction that lasted for eight hours. The dr theorized that the combination induced a kind of REM (dreaming sleep) experience while she was still actually awake, resulting in hallucinations and being completely disconnected. She never had any similar experience before, and never again either, so it was definitely the melatonin/valerian combination. I wouldn't recommend trying them together!

in my experience, valerian is not as effective as you would like it to be. Xanax is good for reducing anxiety, but there are better meds to help with sleep. i often found that because xanax is short acting, i would wake up as soon as it wore off and not be able to fall back asleep. i would recommend getting rid of the xanax all together (if you can), it is a dangerous and destructive drug. try changing your lifestyle, and or outlook on life, sounds hokey but is the most practical advice i can give, guessing i've been where you are (and further). melatonin works great to help fall asleep, but will not help with anxiety.

NO NO NO NO NO.
It is NOT a vitamin- your body does not require it in order to function. It's an herbal or food supplement.
It gets metabolized in your liver just like Xanax does.
Take a warm bath and have a cup of warm milk.

I don't recommend xanax . Valerian root is good by itself. Running is good for anxiety. in other cases energy pills containing ephedra is a good stimulant to treat that.

Call a pharmacy and ask the pharmacist just to be on the safe side.
I am really sorry you have anxiety. I have had chronic anxiety disorder for years and it's hell to live with it. I take Xanax also. It helps me more than anything else I have tried.

Never mix a "herbal drug with a prescription drug especially a Xanex type drug.Did you know that there were over 10 million accidental over-doses last year 2006, involving herbal remedies. Do so only if your MD gives his approval first.Herbal drugs are medications too. What your doing isn't safe, after taking 2 xanex's I think you will be able to sleep. Please take care. SW RNP

www.drugs.com doesn't list those two drugs as having any interactions, but check with your doctor or pharmacist to be sure.
