Global Warming

Tomcat has recently been citing this study by Scafetta & West which concluded that the Sun may be responsible for as much as 25-35% of the warming from 1980-2000, so I thought it would be worth discussing. Here's the paper:

http://www.fel.duke.edu/~scafetta/pdf/2005GL025539.pdf

Here is Real Climate's take:

http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2006/03/solar-variability-statistics-vs-physics-2nd-round/

"S&W do not present any convincing result that would point to noticeably higher sensitivities to long-term variations. Their higher values are based on unrealistic assumptions. If they would use a more realistic climate transfer sensitivity of 0.11K/Wm-2, or even somewhat higher (0.12 or 0.13) for the long-term, and use trends instead of smooth curve points, they would end up with solar contributions of 10% or less for 1950-2000 and near 0% and about 10% in 1980-2000 using the PMOD and ACRIM data, respectively."

Any thoughts on this?

We've had car engines that run on water - or alcohol, for ages. These + other valuable technologies are suppressed so a few can make huge $. The (profit based) insanity of planned obsolesence - must end - on a global level - it is this which is burying our planet in garbage. If we don't make the hard choices & start the change ourselves - it will be forced onto us when Mother Earth flicks us off her shoulder like the parasites the human race has become deserves - when the planet shrugs, the crust moves & we are returned to the stone age.

Those selfish morons with the money & power stuffed into their greedy pockets stifle new inventions & kill off those who attempt to expose them or to set in motion a better way - because - Hey! That's just the way they are!

Meanwhile - what can we do in this controlled world - to make substantial, unstoppable changes? What can we do in our grassroots communities to make real change - NOW! Let's figure it out and get started - NOW!

One movie shows the earth turning into an ice cube. Then another shows the ozone depletation causes the birds to go crazy and parts of the earth to burn up. so what actually is it going to do? What do we have to look forward to?

The 'sceptics' accuse the 'believers' of following a dogma without any proof. When I encounter religious people I leave the rligion alone, unless they are doing any harm, what's the point in trying to change thier mind? they are generally happy in thier ignorance.

What harm are the AGW orientated environmentalists doing?

That is one of the biggest taboos about evolution. That there is proof of the planet being 4.6 billion years old. Fundies believe that the creation of the planet was 4,000 years ago, and deny anything that refers to the Earth being older. Is that what we are up against when it comes to proving global warming?

1) First off, does anyone dispute that humans are producing greenhouse gases?

2) If this is accepted, then is there any dispute that they're going anywhere other than into the atmosphere and / or atmospheric concentrations of GHG's are increasing?

3) If it's agreed that we are adding GHG's to the atmosphere, then is it also agreed that they are contributing to global warming?

4) If not, then what's the difference between manmade GHG's and the natural ones that ensure this planet has a habitable temp?

the qualified expert opinion of the 3000 scientists of the UN IPCC who HAVE CONCLUDED GLOBAL WARMING IS CAUSED BY THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT OF CO2 BUILD-UP BY HUMAN FOSSIL FUEL CONSUMPTION(COAL, OIL, AND BIOFUELS FROM CORN, SUGAR CANE & SWITHGRASS)?

If you believe so, please qualify your answer with reliable facts or sources.

We know the world was warmer millions of years ago but these warm peaks were the culmination of warming trends spanning millions of years. If the planet warmed for the next million years at it's current rate it would reach 17,715°C (3 times as hot as the surface of the Sun).

So, where is there anything that proves or even suggests that at any point in Earth's history it has warmed at a anything even close to the current rate of warming?

If the current warming is a natural cycle then clearly this evidence exists, otherwise how else could such a conclusion have been drawn?

Alternatively, could it be that no one can produced the evidence to indicate the current warming is natural and therefore it's just an assumption or error of judgement by some people?

It seems like almost everyone who doubts anthropogenic global warming bases their doubt on historical evidence, "common sense", or both. This puzzles me, because the global climate is far too complex to simply understand with common sense.

Most of the scientists skeptical of AGW appear to be geologists. This is because geologists study the Earth's history, and conclude "The Earth has gone through climate changes before, and been hotter than it is now, so the current global warming is no big deal". Many laymen use this same reasoning. However, this historical argument ignores the recent data which cannot be explained by natural cycles, as previous climate change events can be.

So some people conclude that because the climate has changed before, humans are not warming it now. Others conclude that humans are too miniscule to be impacting something as large as the Earth's climate.

They not only ignore a vast amount of data, but the experts' conclusions, based on common sense.

DAH ! It seems like no one really cares?

Only those in school in the early 70's and early 80's need reply. I know I was told there was an ice age coming. I know there were teachers that believed this pretty whole heartedly and wanted me to believe it. Chicago area schools. I am sure those same teachers today will shrug that off and make claims about Global warming instead.

When do these people get held accountable for all the false positions they tried to indoctrinate our children (and me back then) with.

Do they just get top keep changing their stories and we say okay.. nod.. and PAY UP?

Yikes.

I have looked at lots of answers to GW questions and found lots of people argue for GW caused by humans, but very few give factual links or even facts. All seem to be speculation and third party "he said she said". Most comments are not accurate or just plain untruths. Most seem to be irrational "the world is going to end" ranting. Arguements for GW as a natural process seem to be genuine historical facts and appear to be rational in their presentation. Such as Ice ages and co2 levels have been a thousand times higher in the period of the dinosaurs. Why are facts like these totally ignored by GW supporters?

What the heck is going! A stupid moron with money goes out and claims it all to be true, makes millions off of it, has NO meteorological education and people STILL think he is speaking truth? Next thing you know we're up for "global warming taxes." I love how you can buy even certain "experts" into saying this B.S. is true. Everyone panics and throws money at them to "try to solve the problem." Wow.... the media and these rich, private-jet-flying, selfish bastards are the ones that profit. Why can't people educate themselves and realize that man-made global warming is FALSE? I'm a meteorologist myself and I can't help but stare in awe at what has happened to our society...

"Of course, he's happy for Vice President Gore, happy for the International Panel on Climate Change scientists, who also shared the Peace Prize,'' Fratto (Bush's spokesman) said.

And this:

"Obviously Vice President Gore has helped to bring attention to climate change,'' Fratto said, with a similar nod to the United Nations organization that shared the prize today. "The IPCC scientists have done remarkable work to bring scientific rigor to the questions surrounding climate change."

Those darn liberals. Don't they know that Michael Crichton has proved the IPCC is wrong? What about Richard Lindzen? Haven't they read co2science or junkscience or surfacestations? How ignorant are they?

In his movie Al Gore severely exagerates and distorts the effects of global warming. His prescriptions would reek much havok in world economies destroying impoverished peoples opportunity to climb the economic ladder. While at the same time doing hardly nothing in reversing the global warming trend.

Ok so lets say global warming really is happening. Then explain to me why the wolrd was ice before and melted. There were no factories and such before? What about that? Do you global warming people study history and realize that the world changes itself and is going thru a NATURAL change. If you people were alive back then u would of drove everybody with your theories about farting too much or something stupid. Please realize the world will melt and there is NOTHING we can do about it. The world will be a waterworld someday and thats mother nature. Nothing we do can change it. Please study your history books.
