We've had car engines that run on water - or alcohol, for ages. These + other valuable technologies are suppressed so a few can make huge $. The (profit based) insanity of planned obsolesence - must end - on a global level - it is this which is burying our planet in garbage. If we don't make the hard choices & start the change ourselves - it will be forced onto us when Mother Earth flicks us off her shoulder like the parasites the human race has become deserves - when the planet shrugs, the crust moves & we are returned to the stone age.
Those selfish morons with the money & power stuffed into their greedy pockets stifle new inventions & kill off those who attempt to expose them or to set in motion a better way - because - Hey! That's just the way they are!
Meanwhile - what can we do in this controlled world - to make substantial, unstoppable changes? What can we do in our grassroots communities to make real change - NOW! Let's figure it out and get started - NOW!

For Gaby: I respect your sincerity however, you are missing some information. There are many inventions which are suppressed consistently because they will reduce the value of products which are bring big profits to existing manufacturers. This is happening in every industry. The motor which will permit running a car on water (compressed steam) has been waiting to be manufactured for many decades. If I can show you the proof - what will you do in return?

Jahss: Show me the proof about how much $ is truly being invested in viable alternatives - let's compare it with the costs of researching, maintaining and publicizing products for the old guard. I'm guessing that we'll find it is about 2% to the alternatives and 2000% to keeping the oil industry going.

Working on contracts at a major university I saw first hand that most research is funded by the pharma industry for scientific research devoted to finding replacements for perfectly good medications. The only purpose: to be able to charge extremely high prices for a long time to come. So that the ones whose patents had run out and could be sold at reasonable prices could be discarded.
The electric car has failed thus far because appropriate development hasn't been directed into it because those making money from oil will lose their massive profits.
Who decides what is cost effective where solar, wind, steam power etc are concerned?
The companies who want huge profits or the people who want low costs. Instead of developing truly affordable power the money is directed only to those areas where the highest profits can be realized... etc etc etc.

I guess you must be one of those ignorant Americans I've only heard about before. You didn't know that the approved disposal for nuclear waste is to encase it in huge concrete containers & drop them into the ocean? You've never heard that thousands of single mothers and little children live from what they can find to eat or sell by picking through miles & miles of maggot filled garbage dumps because their natural resources have been taken by multinationals & the majority of the population have neither industry nor healthcare? Your environment may be beautiful so you don't care that there is garbage floating over the surface of the ocean & lakes, rivers &streams all over the world are polluted. Enormous barges holding mountains of garbage float free on the ocean because there's nowhere to dump it. Cities with soot so thick from the mines that it is dark in the daytime & people live & work & die - without even the chance to go to the countryside? WHO IS IT WHO IS NOT INFORMED?

Your answer gives me an idea about why I've been told that people are brainwashed in America. I'm in Canada & sold technology to Americans and met lots of Americans who do know all about these things. People all over the world know about these things - it is in the US that people are kept in darkness about what the global powers are doing. It's a crying shame - because if you really understood what was actually going on - you'd probably want to find a way to make things improve. Remember when Oprah interviewed people all over the world when the war started after 9/11? Or do you think she isn't well educated either? People all over the world were angry at our leaders but they said they weren't angry at the American people - only at the leaders - because they also know that most US citizens don't realize what their leaders are doing. I'm not the expert on which alternative has been developed nor which are most viable but I do know that those with the power are the ones making their huge fortunes from oil i& have no motivation to develop anything that can function without the use of it. It is like GM - they wouldn't change to fuel efficient cars like everyone else until the US people forced it to happen by buying from Asia & Japan. Now it may be too late for GM & it serves them right. The same principle is in force in all these other instances. Tesla wanted to provide powerless energy "the energy is free - it is in the air - people shouldn't have to pay for it" he said. This at the turn of the century but JP Morgan wouldn't hear of it. We will make fortunes by putting up poles and wires and a little box on each home he told Tesla. I think it is your education, ImpScout, that has been deficient.

We can use the bus instead of driving, recycle plastic, paper, etc., reduce electric power use with efficient bulbs, etc.
We can demand the government not be so wasteful. We pay for their cars, chouffer and other transportation, we can demand they use mass transit and efficient cars.
Consider putting solar panels on your roof. They are cheaper and some places, like California, will help with the cost. The private electric utility will buy whatever power you do not use.
Read TIME´s Global Warming book (2007) they have many, many good ideas. Your library will have it, it´s $10.
Ride a bike, it is good for your health, all your life, even after you stop. Drink water, sodas are bad for you and the planet.

Your question is the perfect answer as to what is wrong with the American education system.
You state outright nonsense as though it was common fact. Cars do run on alcohol .. no doubt.. the fuel would cost 3 times gas if someone could actually provide 20 million gallons a day. As for a car running on H20 .. show me one and I will buy it. If it was so, it would make way more money that a gas car.
As for buried in garbage.. not around here.
Mother Earth loves us. She has made a world perfect for humans. Plenty of hydrocarbon fuel, a great O2 atmosphere, lots and lots of H2O,
and plenty of meat to eat:)

Just visit almost any university around the world and see for yourself. Also the governments around the world spend trillions on research in this area. There is also trillions spent by industry on research and development for products that will save energy and sell. There are also hundreds of thousands of wealthy investors that would gladly invest in any new energy saving devices if they look like they would really work and people would buy it.
We have NOT had cars that run on water. The electric car has failed thus far because it sucked. Solar power has not spread like many of us would like because it has not been cost effective. H2 power has not advanced because no one has figured out how to make it safe and cost effective. etc, etc. etc.

Look at the smaller picture. The stuff in your house. The stuff you put on your skin. The stuff you use to clean.
If they're conventional, they're most likely full of petro-chemicals that are making you sick.
Corporate greed is satisfied by consumer stupidity. Learn more about what YOU are using and how that affects YOUR health and YOUR environment.
Get rid of the toxins under YOUR roof, and a lot of the problems with toxic run-off from processing these petro-chemical concoctions spewing out of our homes will disappear.

By each person being ethical, unselfish, and not any person setting him or herself up as a power authority. The only way to know the planet is to know God. No pork, no eggs, no meat that isn't cow(/ox), chicken, or fish. By living medicine-free and being celibate. No unkosher alcohol. By hoping for a new method of waste disposal, and everything else being recyclable. Much more focus on education; and acknowledgement and care for the disabled.
