We can and it has already been done. Not with trees but with algae and phytoplankton - tiny marine plants that flourish in vast numbers that can be seen as blooms in the oceans from space.
In some parts of the oceans there is a shortage of the minerals that phytoplankton need to thrive, by artificially nourishing the oceans (with iron, urea or both) the phytoplankton can be encourgaed to establish in new environments. When the plants die they sink to the ocean floor taking the captured carbon with them. This technology is being developed and tested by sevaral organisations but one you may wish to check out is Planktos.
An artificial version of photosynthesis has also been developed. It uses sodium hydroxide to sequester carbon dioixide from the atmosphere. A chemical process allows the sodium hydroxide to be recycled and reused and the primary by product is synthetic gasoline or diesel that can be sold to offset the running costs.
The early scheme was developed by Professor Klaus Lackner, since then it has been refined and other people have become involved.

Imitating biological reactions like this is _very_ hard. They use complex enzymes to make the reactions happen. Synthesizing those and getting them arranged right to work the process is very difficult.
People are working on it. But right now the better approach is to limit the emissions in the first place.
That's just engineering, which we know how to do.

Trees are amazing, 30m 90' tall, using up so much light that in summer very little will grow beneath them. Self reproducing (no energy costs in manufacture) Millions of years in evolution, pretty well perfect if you ask me. We've got to learn to leave them alone.
Trees release alot of carbon at night and through thier root system.

well unfortunately they also cut down the trees to make space for farming, and or tourist attraction all over the world. that`s why they say it`s your actions that create damages. we often think that we`re doing something good for ourselves or the community like cutting down trees for farming , but we do not spend enough time thinking about the outcome of our actions because more often than anything else the base of our decision will be about money, not about this planet and all it`s living things.i`ll tell you a story. here in canada we have the beaver. this animal is so amazing about how he can create life around him for the other animal. it`s the one that brings water where it`s needed and on and on. it`s a good fella for the canadians. so, the german and the brazilian seeing that decided to bring the canadian beaver into there own country to help for their own forest. well guess what. in those country the beaver create more damages then anything else. they do their job! but the thing is that in those countries the soil is different and it`s missing an essential step for life. so it destroy instead of creating. and because that they do not have a natural predator like wolf to hunt them, well they multiply. they have a huge problem with these animals now. we don`t always know what can happen. especially if we don`t take the time to think about the futur. so really, it`s not just about the bad things that we do but also the ones that we think that are good that help creating global warming. and there are just too many of them. co2, cigarette, hole in the ozone, industries, farming, fishing, importations-exportations that brings animals from one country to another by choices or accidents, by keeping the sicks around- sorry for the one that may feel offended by my say but seriously do you see any weaks and sick animals in natures? we cut trees and on and on. not too many peoples can see the hole picture of what us the peoples do to our own and unique planet, the only one.
in my opinion.
we are deranging the natural cycle of recycling, we create garbages and lots of it. we create things that are not recyclable. we take more than needed. we want more than what we want to give. money is the issue, not our survival. we want superficial things and life instead of the true thing, nature, the one that makes us, feed us, cleansing, rejuvinate, purifying, beautifull colors and smells, shapes and forms. we rather choose to live with machines, to let the machines take our job, or do our job, no matter if those machines are good for the earth or not. city peoples. i am from a big city and believe me. for as much that it took me a lot of time to adapt in a small town-6000 peoples- since i taste nature, i will never go back in a city. it`s so much more healthier in the bush. you make your own choices, you can take the result. i always told my daughter that; be carefull with what you do today cause tomorow will come and you`ll have to face it! you better make it good!!!
and guess what? she`s like most of you, she don`t care! you know why? because like most of you, you just have it to easy.
too superficial, too artificial, not much around is true anymore. so how can you see the true? if only planting some trees could be enough for the global warming, but this in itself only cannot change the attitude of the peoples.

Easier said than done.
This sounds like a great opportunity for your life's work. If you are serious, go ye forth and get a PHD in biochemistry or a related field and figure out how to do it.

Sounds like a good Idea, but it also sounds very expensive so it probably wont be favorable to many people. It also sounds very complicated which also doesn't sound very appealing to most people.

b/c the president will probably disagree with it. Kinda like with stem cell research--even though it may save millions, it's against his religion.
