Global Warming

"The ocean's plankton can suck up far more airborne carbon dioxide (CO2) than previously realised, although the marine ecoystem may suffer damage if this happens, a new study into global warming says."

http://green.yahoo.com/news/afp/20071111/sc_afp/scienceclimatewarmingocean.html

So there's some good news - the tipping point where ocean CO2 absorption becomes a positive feedback appears to be further off than we expected. Unfortunately, this CO2 absorption also causes ocean acidification.

"Another concern is that rising levels of dissolved CO2 also causes acidification of seawater. Wildlife such as coral, which secretes a skeletal structure, are known to be affected by acidification but the impact on other marine species is largely unknown."

At least there's some good news though. Any thoughts on the impact of this finding on climate change as a whole?

"The Nobel-winning panel of world climate experts on Monday launched a debate over a landmark report after a top UN official warned any failure to curb global warming would be "criminally irresponsible."

"The effects of climate change are being felt already," Yvo de Boer, executive secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), said.

"Climate change will hit hardest the poorest and most vulnerable countries. Its overall effect, however, will be felt by everyone and will in some cases threaten people's very survival."

"Failing to recognize the urgency of this message and acting on it would be nothing less than criminally irresponsible," he said."

Do you agree that failing to act to slow global warming is criminally irresponsible?

"In a worrying sign that scientists may be slowly succumbing to the siren song of geo-engineering, a panel of top climate researchers cautiously endorsed a proposal to fund more research looking into unorthodox ways to stop global warming. While no formal statement was released, Phil Rasch, a modeler with Boulder's University Corporation for Atmospheric Research and a member of the panel, spoke for the great majority of his colleagues when he stated: "We're not saying that there should be geoengineering, we're saying there should be research regarding geoengineering."

The problem with geoengineering (examples given in the link above) is that it's risky to mess with nature. What are your thoughts on this potential option in addressing global warming?

I've researched both arguments before forming a belief and the more I do the more credible evidence i find supporting it. Global warming is natural yes, but if you research the mechanics of global change. You'll see there is too much carbon dioxide trapped in our atmostphere. From our burning of coal and fuel. It's gotten to the point that too much of the suns heat is reflecting off the earth and getting trapped in our atmosphere instead of going into space. It's too easy to say false. Especially considering all the other conspiracy theories we hear eveyday.. Don't let these consipiracies close your mind to everythign you hear. It's the "Boy who cried wolf" scenerio. Let's not let this happen to us. To our children and theirs. So I ask YOU! SKEPTIC. Why can't you give it the benefit of the doubt and look into it some more? What if it IS real and we CAN prevent it from getting worse? Do you want to be holding people off at gunpoint to protect your clean water supply and grandchildren?

And the rediculous thing is that even after people read about all this, they're still going to claim the sky is falling.

... wouldn't "peak oil" and the pollution from coal be reasons enough to do all we can to speed up the research, development and implementation of more renewable energy sources?

The world's demand for energy will not decrease. To those denying greenhouse gases can cause global warming, do you really want to run right into peak oil with no other real alternatives than coal (or nuclear) power?

I just read an interesting piece on the Harris-Mann Climatology website they call "Long Range Weather." The site is run by Cliff Harris and Randy Mann (not Michael Mann).

They discuss a number of facts that indicate climate may have shifted to a cooling phase. They also mention Robert Felix, author of "Not by Fire, but by Ice" about a coming Ice Age!

If it is not one thing, it is another! I would much rather have global warming than another Ice Age.

There is all this talk going on about huge untapped gas and oil resources in the arctic circle that will only become available as the ice melts. The ice will melt causing problems, like flooding, for coastal cities (which is pretty much all major cities of the world). But hey, don't worry everyone, we'll have more gas and oil to pump more CO2 into the sky!!! Is this world going crazy. Can't they see the problem with this logic!? Are we all still so short sighted!? Instead of looking for energy recources we are willing to wait for the earth to slowly die (i.e. more melting ice) just so we can drill out more of this dirty energy source!!! Does it infuriate anyone else out there, or is it just me?

With global warming around the world, can these cause excessive melting thereby creating a bigger rivers and waterfalls and results into flooding in the northern hemisphere area??? just a creepy thought.... your ideas pls

It seems that most of the people on here that belive we need to do something about global warming simply state it as a fact without any basis. Furthermore, many of them don't even seem to understand that the debate isn't over global warming-its over ANTHROPOGENIC (human induced) global warming. Why do they do that. I have been trying to be open minded but its hard when the advocates of one side don't give you logic, they give you ridicule and a guilt-trip for wanting more than a repetition of cliches they heard on tv from some famous actress.

I have the 'honor' of spending a weekend in a hotel that carries only Fox News Channel. It's raining cats and dogs, I don't have anything to read, so I am watching their 'The Price of Freedom' and I cannot believe my ears.

IS Fox The ONLY News Channel on the PLANET that ridicules and actively opposes the very real danger of Climate Change?
The LEADING News Channel in the US?
Jeez, their audience must be idiots.
Are you one of them?
Why? Lost your marbles?
