The Bush administration is loosening the limits on mountaintop removal practices, making it easier for large coal companies to come in & destroy the beautiful mountains of Appalachia while dumping the slate and excess debris in the streams. Does anybody outside of this area care about the issue? It was on the front of the NY Times, but I don't know if anybody else cares.

More info...

why try to stop it if it will only bring global cooling that much faster? cooler temperatures would be nice!

Generally, the temperature increase due to a doubling of CO2 (280 ppm to 560 ppm) should result in a global average temperature increase of about 1.5 degrees C.

Most of the predictions for future warming lie in the 3 to 11 degree C range, although a few people predict that we could have uncontrolled warming.

Given this difference between CO2 forcing and predicted temperature increases, there is an implication that there is some sort of positive feedback mechanism.

Is it reasonable to assume that there is a positive feedback mechanism at work? Especially in light of the fact that almost all natural systems exhibit negative feedback mechanisms (broad generalization) that tend to dampen the effects of perturbations to a system.

I realize that H2O is often cited as the mechanism, but there is a high degree of uncertainty due to the fact that water vapor can be a driver of cooling AND warming.

Is there historical precedence for assuming that these positive feedbacks exist?

I've asked in the cooking and other sections of Answers...I've bought a 50 lb bag from my local coop. I'm grinding it and making bread. It tastes the same I guess. I can't find anyone who can tell me for sure if it's the same wheat. It can't harm me right???? Who knows...I might just sprout horns and say moo.

You know like, passing laws about car maufactureres only making eco friendly cars
building of new properties all being energy efficient - own solar panels etc . . . .

I just don't feel like they are doing enough or setting a good enough example.

Scientists recently declared that the Chinese White River Dolphin was extinct after living for many million years. The key reason is severe pollution of the Yangtse River. I am so mad that I want to sue the Chinese government on behalf of Mother Nature....Realistically, how much is an animal species worth?

I know, weird question. But if a station is on even slightly higher ground, then an approaching train will lose speed naturally, without braking (as much). The saved energy would then be used to help the train accelerate (down-hill) as it leaves the station the other side.

I realise that the differences in speed/acceleration involved would be marginal, but with the energy needed to move the hundred tons plus of just an average commuter train, any small help would translate into a substantial saving of energy.

Now I may be being a muppet, and there may be a very obvious reason why this is a bad idea, but I can't find it. OK, ok, considerable start up costs of hoiking Waterloo up 10 feet in the air, but aside from that........ can anyone tell me why this wouldn't work in principle?

i read that you can recycle paper by shredding it and make packaging materials. Now the thing is, I really don't know how to make packaging materials out of shredded paper? AND, in this project, we have to make something that is not costly, not time consuming, and very scientific. So guys, I really need your help and support. Thanks so much!

There are a lot of paper thrown away and we want to lessen it and make it as something... could you please give some guidelines, examples of recycling paper and some websites that can help me here? thanks so much!

There are more and more recent environmental phenomenon including hurricanes, flooding, tornadoes, droughts, record breaking heat waves, and yes wildfires that could be interpreted as stemming from global warming. What is your opinion on this and what facts do you have to support your view?

A small temperature increase will likely increase agricultural yields in North America a cause droughts in the Middle East and North Africa. Surely the policy makers must know that it is cheaper to drive a SUV in Chicago than to drive an M1 Abrams in Baghdad or Tehran.

Believers of global warming theory explain the lag something like this. Some event caused temperatures to start rising or falling for the first eight hundred years. CO2 levels start to rise or fall, effecting temperatures for the remaining 4 000 years. Is this a theory or is it scientifically proved? What scientific evidence exists to support this theory? How can one be sure that the event that caused the temperature change is not the factor for the remaining 4000 years as well with co2 levels playing a small or insignificant factor in the increase? Do you think it is misleading when Al Gore says in his film that the ice core samples are proof positive that co2 levels effect temperatures.
