My boyfriend has gotten interested in saving power (for money and for the environment) and has taken to shutting off the power strips that the TV/Computer/etc... are hooked into every night. Evidently they use power even when they are off (is that true?). But a friend told me that you risk using more energy every time you turn them on than you save by turning them off. Is this true? What is the best method of actually saving energy?

Is it acceptable to wait until reputable science in this field has reduced the already small uncertainties further or is it long past the time when many more of us accept that the precautionary principle applies?

After our trash is picked up, there is always water on the bottom of the trash can.

I have mixed it in with my in-laws cocktails when they visit - so there is nothing toxic in it.

What is in that mysterious liquid?

Why doesn't the government mandate recycling? Or is it the peoples choice? Should, in your opinion, local, state, or national governments mandate this? We lived up north and there were regular recycling trucks that came around to collect glass, both colored and clear, as well as magazines, news papers, aluminum, plastic. Now we live down south and all you seem to have is a dumpster every few miles labeled newspaper only. I'm interested i your opinion. Yes, we recycle what we can locally.

During the life of our earth so far, do we know how many times this planet has gone through warming and cooling cycles? We all know of 2 ice ages which also infere that there were at least 2 warming ages. Antarctic drill cores suggest that there have been a few more . Some scientists drilled elsewhere , in Africa I think, and concluded that there have been many more global temp changes, noticing the different rock and organic layers. Man does contribute a lot to global warming, witness large cities creating their own weather patterns, as an example. In my view we are / were due for some kind of global change regardless. This earth is continually changing ; plates shifting/sliding, volcanoes, weak rifts opening up. Most changes we would not normally be aware of anyway since they occur under water.

So whats the answer? My short one? "Get used to it"

Any other thoughts out there?
