I am tutoring a 5 yr old boy in reading and writing and he is extremely unmotivated. I don't want to give him tangiable rewards because I made that mistake before and he kept expecting them.
So this is what I was going to do for the 1 hour:
Give him free (2 mintues) every 20 minutes during each transition.( Remember he is a kindergarter and their attention span does not exceed 20 minutes! )
The following things for him to choose from would be:
Drawing
Coloring
Tic Tac Toe
Read a book of his choice
Get up and walk around
Tell me a joke/quick story

Can you think of anything else ???

"Only the inner city kids are not motivated, lazy and useless. Usually somewhat retarded." -da_hammerhead. I teach in an inner-city school system, and the children there are not lazy or retarded. Inner-city schools often receive less funding, few extra opportunities (extracurricular, and academics), and less parental involvement. Inner-city children do often times come with more baggage, because they have had more harsh experiences. I teach first grade in an inner-city school system, and my students are not lazy or useless. Many are behind, but it is my duty to do my best to pull them up and to show them that they can succeed. I see children that are already demotivated and broken. There's nothing sadder than to see a 6 year old that is broken. I am not only their teacher, but they mother/father, doctor, friend, and support system. Children rise to the expectations set forth for them. I hope that you are not a teacher hammerhead, because if so, you do not deserve to teach them.

How to create a good atmosphere for studying (positive energy) in my room. And be concentrated on the subject I have.
I used to study my chair and back against the wall. Now for some reasons I changed the position, so my back is against the chair only not the wall cuz it is now infront of me. I found difficulties in adaptation it. Does this scientifically proved anything about studying with the back against or not?????

I am switching grades next year and was wondering some of the differences I will encounter academically. For example how are read-alouds done at this level? What are some good mentor texts to read to them? What are some incentives(as I was told they are "too old" for stickers)?.
