At this stage they will just be learning to identify and recognise various objects by naming and reading the basic phonic sounds. It will be good to have worksheets with the picture of an item, it's name and its phonic sound. For example:

(picture of a boat) the phonic sound "b" in small letter form at the top and the word "boat' with the 'b' in bolded print underneath the apple. They can colour the boat. You can do the same thing on the board using magnets to help you stick the phonic sound, item and word on the board. You can use this first to introduce the reading and use the worksheet for reinforcement. You can also have the kids do this too.

Later on for evaluation you can have them match the 'b' sound or word " boat" to the correct picture of given pictures.

When I was in Kindergarden my teacher read books to us sometimes that usually were educational, and she had a bunch of books available that we could read if we wanted to. I know how to read very well and I think everyone I know in that class is the same way so I think that is a good method.
