Sometimes when I tell parents about their child's bad behavior in the classroom, some parents become very helpless. I've had parents tell me "Oh, he does the same thing at home." or "He doesn't listen to me at home either." What do you do when you encounter such parents? I'm curious as to what advice other teachers give to these parents.

I'm hoping to start teaching in the fall, and have a great background in my subject matter (social studies), but I have no experience teaching (I'm currently going to school to get my master's in education though). Can anyone recommend any good books that I might find helpful and informative for new teachers? THANKS!

Teachers!

What inspired you to become a teacher? What subject do you teach? Why did you pick that content/subject?

Basically, I want to hear your story.

I consider it to be such a blessing and privilege to work with children. I'm just trying to get a good quote to go at the end of my e-mails that summarizes the importance and beauty of teaching. I teach grades five and six. Thanks in advance.

Unicef and number of countries working to educate the children , specially for the weaker section sections of the societies but millions of hapless children are uneducated , working as bounded laboures in some asian and african countries. No means of basic needs are available for them , parents cannot afford the costly afairs of schools. Wish to unite the educated people to teach such kids. Difficult to assess and access the area due to lack of funds ans other socio-economic reasons. Just give it a thought and write to me.

I teach high school students who are not easily motivated educationally and have difficulty finding direction in their lives. I was wondering if creating a lesson where the students are assigned the task of writing their own obituary would be appropriate. I would tell them that the focus is not how they died or at what specific age but what they were able to accomplish during their life time and what they would be remembered for. Is this lesson too morbid?

If you've ever taught, you know what I mean. There's always one name that you spend all year saying over and over for whatever reason that when you have a kid of your own you vow NEVER to use because that name reminds you of you know who!! What's your name?? If you feel up to sharing why you don't like that name, feel free. Or you can stay annoyomous.

The names I can't ever use with my kids (when I have them) are:
Edward
Kyle
Brittany
Brandon

The British Council in India is the only dependable organization for teaching English to countles toiling and hard-pressed Indians. But it teaches English without supplying syllabus of grammar to these hapless and despaired people. How can we teach English without helping our students in preparing their own handbooks containing rules of grammar? I wrote the British Coucil atleast ten times during the last five years, but I always suffered in dearth of reply. This rather unbelievable stance of a philanthropic entity reminds me Mathew Arnond's words of enchanting veneration about Shakespeare : "Others abide by our questions; thou are free"
. The British Council should not assume the role of the greatest maker of English prose by not supplying the syllabus of grammar and by not replying to queiries of English teaches like me who feed their families by teaching correct and refined English. I shall be much grateful if I receive reply from the Headquarters of the British Council.
