Very funny!
I am a teacher. I teach elementary students. Sometimes we do group work that is quite noisy. It takes a lot of training to have little ones to use their inside voice. Other times I am a traditional teacher- I teach (lecture) and have students listen. It can be uncomfortable when you are doing this, especially if you don't know your subject or you are new to teaching or you are set in being a "dictator" type of teacher. Sometimes students will bring in their own shared knowledge from past experiences into the discussion, but sometimes teachers do not want to get off of topic because they have a set time to finish a lesson plan.
I don't know what your teacher has to do or what kind of teacher she is, but I hope you are aware that not all teachers are like this one.
I hope I have given you some things to think about when she wants the class to completely quiet.

From "Seattle Weekly":
"TO MAKE A SOUND, you have to start from silence, but you can never actually hear silence. (Take every other sound away, as John Cage did in an anechoic chamber at MIT in the late '40s, and you'll hear a three-part arrangement: The bass is your circulatory system, the prickle of treble is your nervous system, the unshakable riff in the midrange is your breath.)"
I've done a similar experiment myself, deep in the caverns of Mammoth Caves and other caves, where there is no sound but yourself -- people spaced far enough apart that you can't hear them breathing, just by yourself. Very spooky and thought provoking. But neat. Would love to do it longer than the couple of minutes allowed.
But, obviously, your teacher is just trying to enforce a point. Good question, though.

Hi,
Since silence is the absence of noise you cannot strictly speaking hear it. Your teacher is being lazy in mode of expression

Its just a saying. Would you rather hear "I want to hear absolutely nothing" You can't really hear nothing, literally speaking. She's trying to say "shut up" in the nicest way possible.

Yes, then you " hear" more of what's going on in your head. It's called deep thinking.
