I have had this problem too. What you need is a new dry erase marker. Use that marker to scribble on top of where the permanent marker is on the white board. Then erase! This always works for me when my students decide to use a sharpie on my board!

This is something I've run into many times. One little trick I picked up years ago that works pretty well is to use a dry erase marker. Rub it over and over to cover the spot where the permanent marker was used, and then wipe clean with your eraser. Most times, it cleans it up enough to write over.

I've used hairspray and it works. Now, I always keep a can in my classroom because you never know what person will grab a permanent marker even though they are nowhere near my whiteboard.

Whatever you do, don't use a harsh cleaner. From experience, comet will kill the white board. I did get lucky when I tried the scribbling over the permanent spot with another dry erase and wiping off. It worked for me.

The dry erase cleaner works, as does alcohol and the scribble over with a new dry erase marker. I prefer alcohol, but keep it away from students!

If the cleaner you are provided does not work, try using a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. It seems to work.
