As a teacher I am challenged to teach a variety of subject areas, all of which are important. I love teaching, but I want to know what adults having gone through the "system" think is the primary goal of a public education.

So, I am writing a Science Fiction novel that will fall under the Young Adult market Genre. I am looking for some input on a couple of topics. Those in the business and those who just love to read are encouraged to respond.

Religion in YA literature. In this novel the Christian church has become corrupt and is using science and politics along with Christian doctrine to maintain power. Is this idea too adult for the genre I am marketing? Would this drive readers and/or publishers away? How much doctrine can I use before I get considered a heretic?

In this futuristic society sex has been removed and the main characters discover what has been eliminated. My question is how much sex is too much sex for a young adult book. I do understand that graphic sex scenes are a no; I would just like opinions on where the line is drawn.

I am greatful for all answers but realize that my audience is always the student despite what us adults think.

I had a sub. teacher in 8th grade who disliked my presence in the classroom. I assume she chose to make an example out of me by punishing me for basically everything I did to prove that she meant "buisness". The first few of times that she made me write out sentences, stare at a wall etc. I did deserve it, I was making jokes in the middle of her class and being the class clown. After awhile though, I started raising my hand when she subbed and trying to act better(partly due to frequent hand cramps from writing sentences), but she would still find things to yell at me for, one of the things she made me write out sentences for was telling a girl I liked her hair.(not during class either) So I deliberately started doing things to get her mad, which was wrong & I shouldn't of. But that was because I thought I wouldn't see her again and was getting in trouble anyways, now I found out she'll be subbing at my highschool anything I can do to start a clean slate and maybe get on her good side?
