in the United States it varies by state. At least a bachelor's degree in either education or the language you want to teach, appropriate teaching courses including internships and student teaching. Some universities may require a stay in the target language country or an OPI (oral proficiency interview) to determine your level of competance in the language. Some states require that you get your bachelor's in your language and then add a year for teacher preparation. It varies widely by state. Most teachers have a Master's degree, either in their subject area or in education, and most states require that you continue to take courses throughout your teaching career in order to remain fresh and up-to-date. I would contact universities in the State you want to teach (their School of Education) as well as the website of the State Department of Public Instruction for the states in which you want to teach.

You need to have a Bachelor of Arts degree and a CELTA or DELTA certificate in either country. If you want to teach in these countries in the public education system you need a Bachelor of Education with a teacher's license. You can only teach ESL/EFL at private colleges and schools without the Bachelor of Education in TESL/TEFL. Bad schools will let you teach all over the world if you have a B.A. a B.S. and are a native speaker of English. But if you really want to teach at good schools and be able to teach anywhere than it is good to have a Bachelor's degree in something(Education, English) and a Masters degree in TESOL.

You have to ask yourself if you want to teach highschool or elementary school. This is public and different than just having a certificate.

The British Council is online and they have the best certificates and I strongly suggest you do one of theirs (CELTA/DELTA)

There are M.Ed. and M.A. that take one year and they are really worth it if you want to make big money in the best schools in far away places like Japan and the UAE.
