If you want to go the traditional route you would need a 4 year degree in teaching and a teacher's certificate to be able to teach in the public school system.

Another route is to get National Board Certified. It is, I think, somewhat similar to getting the 4 year degree but I think it is more intense, but again I'm not sure.

Either way you would need to "prove" yourself by taking a national test, PRAXIS II, pass and complete the necessary courses to be able to teach.

Each state has their own set of requirements for elementary school teachers. In our state, earning a teaching degree is considered to be a 5 year program. In addition to completing the credit hour requirements to earn a Bachelor's degree, you must also complete a set amount of hours of pre-student teaching in addition to a semester of student teaching. Visit a college or university you may be interested in attending and speak with a career counselor or academic adviser. You may also wish to search the website of your state's educational department. If you are still in high school, your school guidance counselor will also be able to guide you.

It depends on the state. NYC requires a Bachelor's degree plus a Master's within 5 years.

This is a two-fold question. One is if you are already a college grad and have other experience. If you do then there are alternative routes to licensure. If you are a current college student then you would want to major in Education. Go to your states Department of Education website. It will explain all of its licensure issues. I believe Mass. is a Praxis state. So you would have to sit for the Praxis no matter which route you take.

it really depends on the state i think. education laws are determined by each state separately. in pennsylvania, you go to school for four years to get a bachelors degree to teach. you can teach after your four years of schooling. you will need to get your masters (in most cases) eventually though in order to get tenure and such. also in PA, it is state law to maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average while in college. in addition to schooling, there are several tests you have to take. to be certain visit the department of education website for your state. i hope this helps a little bit. i'll put the pennsylvania department of education in my source.
