My mom makes under $25,000 a year. She's a single mother, trying to support my brother and I. My parents are divorced and my dad doesn't pay child support. I was accepted to an excellent university that costs $25,000/yr. I have a Pell grant from the federal government, a nice scholarship from a local organization, and some merit aid. Problem is, I've had a rough first year and my merit aid may run out because I'm ending this semester which under a 3.0 GPA (2.7).

I feel like I'm drowning. Next year I may be an RA, which will eliminate housing- but I'm still short nearly 8k and to the extent I can go with federal loans. My mom says it'd be a good idea if I claim myself next year as a legal independent on our tax return. Is this a good idea? Is there anyone out there with a similar background? How am I going to survive the next 3 years and overcome the burden of poverty?

I'm applying for college this fall and I've been applying for a bunch of scholarships and grants. Quite a few of the ones I'm finding are based on race, sexual orientation, etc. I don't know if it's just me, but I think it's highly unfair. One in particular was a grant for a First Generation college student with financial need. It was perfect except for one minor thing; you had to be hispanic to be eligible. I personlly think scholarships should be based on merit and grants should be based on financial need. I don't think certian ones should be available for black students only. I also don't think you should recieve one just for being gay. Does anyone else agree with me?

I am entering a master program this fall and need to fill out FAFSA to get loans. It needs my 1040EZ, what if I didn't work and had no W-2? I heard Grad students are automatically considered as independent. Can I use my parents' tax info on FAFSA?

I read somewhere that Muslim people can not take out loans. If so how do they pay for college, if they can't find grants and scholarships.

I am currently attending Axia college online and they have my financial aid so messed up that I can't get into another college because at this point it is showing that I owe the college money -I have called my financial lender to see if the hold up was on their side and they informed me that the school hasn't had me enrolled for the past six months - which is past my grace period so now I have to start paying those loans back, even though I still have months left of school. I have called the school many, many times to try and resolve this and my financial counselor said that she sent my account to her manager - whom has not returned one of my phone calls since I started the school.
So, I have been doing this with the school for a little over six months - they keep telling me that as long as I stay enrolled they will get my situation taken care of, but again, nothing. Do you think that I have a legal case and if so.. what type of an attorney would handle a case like this?

I am in a horrible situation with my prior college which will result in having a withdrawal failure for a semester I never withdrew 4 years ago. It's already bad enough they're charging me (at least they're letting me settle - from $9760 to $6800 - which I still think is ridiculous) but now my good transcript is screwed.

Many people have told me to just apply to the new college as a freshman. I don't know...I have until January...

My university says federal fin aid prohibts them from using future fin aid pymts to pay off charges from a prior semester. In other words you cannot plan on using current year aid to pay for anything left over from a previous semester. I am a single parent working two jobs with three kids (9, 8, and 2) who can graduate after two more semester. I have not been able to return and already to my limit of how many classes I can transfer in. I have bad credit and unable to streach what I have anyfurther to pay off last summers 3,000 dollar debt so that I can return to college. I have been out of school so long that my student loan will be in repayment soon. Where can I get a loan or help so that I can get back in to my university?

Once you get scholarship money.. where does it go? Does it go in a bank account.. if so, do I need to make a bank account?
Can I use it for more than school? What are my limits?

Is there a website that covers all my questions about scholarships?

I am a divorced 40 year old single mom of 2. I am seriously thinking of returning to college to get a bachelors degree and then maybe law school. I did some college in my younger years but never finished or obtained a 2yr degree. Does anyone know if I can return as a displaced homemaker and have my living expenses and child care (after care) paid for while I attend college? Will I received assistance for the same from the government? Has anyone ever achieved the same? I have no help and I am on my own. I am a low paid legal assistant and made less than 8k last year due to being laid off ( my boss took ill). I am always told I'd make an excellent atty. I want to go for it but being a single mom always held me back.
