Education & Reference - 5 November 2006

I'm considering joining the army after high school for money for college. Before I make any decisions, I have some questions I hope you can answer.

> How much money will I get and how long do I have to serve?

> Does it make any difference because I'm a girl? Will there be anything I can/can't do?

> I'm kind of a wuss. I don't mind being yelled at or called a maggot, I mean physically. But I'm not opposed to getting in shape or training for it either.

> I'm not opposed to this either, but for my mother's sake, what are my chances of going to Iraq (etc.)?

> I graduate in May of 2008, but I don't turn 18 until September 2008. Will this cause any problems? (I'm thinking it will)

> Is it worth my time?

Thank you SO much for any answer you can provide me with. I want to go to medical school (preferrably University of Chicago) and I know I'm going to need lots of money.

I'm in eighth grade, and i was wondering if any other teenagers felt this way!?

Will learning a martial art help me get into college?

I really want to learn brazilian jiu-jitsu and right now I'm having a little trouble asking my parents. I'm a sophomore in high school and I juggle other sports such as golf. I want to learn brazilian jiu-jitsu as a hobby but do you think it would help me get into college such as something I could list or maybe somewhere I could get a letter of reccomendation from? I really want to take bjj but I think I would make a more convincing arguement it helped me get into a better college. Also later on if My bjj is very strong I want to become involved in Mixed Martial Arts is that a help too?

Should more PUBLIC high schools have selective admissions?

Should there be more public high schools (in the US) with a competitive admissions process?

Examples of such schools are Stuyvesant High School in New York and Lowell High School in San Francisco. Entry to these schools is largely based on GPA and test results (a specially-designed entrance exam for Stuyvesant, and California's standardised exam for Lowell).

Yet, such schools are few in number. In most districts, students and parents have no choice over public schools. Regardless of academic ability, all students in a given area are thrown together in one school. The only way out? Private schools with exorbitant tuitions. Such a system is evidently biased in favour of those who can afford to pay private school tuition.

Of course, people will argue that selective public schools will also disadvantage the poor, certain ethnic groups, etc. However, by comparison, they would still represent an opportunity for bright students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
