Other - Computers - August 2007

I have an old laptop I dont use anymore and a desktop which was built for me which might be good but I don't use it either. My church is looking for donated computers for their genealogy work but I first want to wipe out the hard drives. Problem is I don't want to spend any money getting these old systems ready for sell or give away. Any advice?

I was checking default settings in control panel and under choose Default Media Player section, I see Use My Current Player,Quick Time,and Windows Media Player, choices. Use My Current Player is checked. What exactly does this do? I can use other one when I use the programs accordingly can't I ? What changes if I check Use Media Player as default? Will others work when needed? My Canon Camera uses Quick time for video.

My computer no longer goes into standby mode?????

I want to put my computer in standby mode but it does not go in stand by mode when i go to the turn off my computer the three options come up like this:
Standby in fade unable to be clicked on
Restart green light and is able to click on
and the turn off computer which is red and light and is able to be clicked on??
Why is the standby button fade?
it happens to me ALL THE TIME, every time i get a new comp or reboot my comp

oh and...
is it bad to keep my desktop on forever cuz i just usually use it every day so i put it on standby over night wake up or when ever i need to use i come back use it put it in stanby and so forth....is this bad for my computer?

If i am connected to a residential network, can the computer with the router remotely see the webpages i've been on? The computer with the router is windows 98 with 72 megs out of 2 gigs open, and is about 10 years old. My comp is windows xp, 500 gig hard drive, 2 gigs ram, and 2.87 dual core gigahertz processor.

I bought a computer off of the Cyberpower website back in February even after I read all of the terrible reviews about them. It took forever for my computer to finally arrive, but after it did I was fairly happy with it for about two weeks before it started having problems. After having had it for six months, I am thoroughly sick of it and would like to get ALL of my money back (it cost about $2,200), though they don't let you return computers after you've had them for over a month. So I was wondering what kind of things I should say on the phone to try to get them to give me a refund. I wouldn't really want to take legal action seeing as how I'm only fifteen. :)

I have about a 750MB .dv movie that was created on a Mac and plays perfectly on a Mac; however, it will not play properly on my PC. In Quicktime, about 10-30 seconds will play until the video stops, but even those 10-30 seconds are very, very poor quality. I tried it in VLC, and the quality is fine there, but the video stops after about 15 seconds (and I cannot fast forward or anything, either). Is my PC just a piece of junk and cannot handle the file size or format, or is there something I am doing incorrectly? Would converting the file to another format? If so, are there any free programs? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated -- thanks!
