I received a computer request from Microsoft to validate my systems, and I can see why Microsoft wants to ensure that users' systems are authentic, but I am not sure that it is advantageous to me. I have a Dell computer and the computer came with Windows XP and Office, so I am sure that my systems are valid. However, once you agree to Microsoft's validation procedure, the process stays on your computer, transmits information to the company, can never be deleted, and anytime you download anything from Microsoft, you will have to go through the validation process again. Are most of you authorizing Microsoft to do this? Please let me know.
Thanks for your help!

What is the difference between virtual and physical memory?
What can I purchase to improve my virtual memory?
And lastly, is 384 MB sufficient for allocation as RAM?

Just before posting this I was having trouble with my virtual memory and I just double it from 192 to 384. Should this improve the performance of my computer enough or do I need more. It says 384 is the maximum.

I'm gonna restart and see if it's any faster...

Our new computer (from PC World) Has Windows Vista installed. When I try to make a connection, via AOL, a box appears saying "This disc is compatible only with Windows XP. We have had XP for several years, and just assumed we could use our old installation disc, as we are still existing AOL custumers. My wife phoned AOL and explained what was happening, and was told that we needed an installation disc for Vista. The big problem is, nobody seems to know where we can get these discs. We were told to go to any major outlet, and pick one up, but no place seems to have them. We then found a store that "Did" have them, but no longer "had them" The guy did however,"burn" us a copy of the Vista installation disc. All seemed well when we tried it, except, when we entered our AOL username and password, it would not accept, and kept informing us that, we were not using the correct username/password. Can anyone help? We`ve been trying for a whole week, all to no avail.

I was at work surfing the internet and picked up some spyware or a virus and it's causing me a lot of grief. Now my computer won't run any .exe programs and I have no idea what to do. Any advice?

The site I got the virus from is www.allabout-sp.net if that helps. It is a great site, but just after they switched to a dedicated server, they were apparently hacked and I am one of the few that caught a virus before the intrusion was discovered.

Please help, if I can't get it fixed I lose my job.

System restore is NOT an option.

I downloaded some episodes of a TV show and one of the episodes won't play. Everytime I try to open it, the programme I open it with shuts down with the 'Microsoft.....has encountered a problem and needs to close' message. This happens no matter what programme I open it with. I've scanned it for a virus and it's fine, all the other eps work fine and this video has the same properties as all the others. I've tried deleting it and downloading it again, but it still won't work. Even when I had windows explorer open and the thumbnail view on, that shut down too. The files are all DIVX (I have the codecs). Help?

When running a system defrag in Windows XP Home Edition 2002 version with service pack 2 the thing stops and goes and seems to go on forever. I've turned off the obvious things like screensaver but I know there are other things that must have to be turned off in order for the defrag to run in a timely manner. Could someone please advise me as to what I need to shut down in order to do this? I've gone to ctrl/alt/delete and there's a lot in there. What needs to be shut down to run a timely defrag? Or better still, what needs to be left on? Thanks in advance.
