I don't do any "real" work on it. Just play games at pogo, read the news, keep up with friends and family. I have a pre-teen daughter who will use it for school research. But other than those it's strictly for entertainment and somethign to do with my time.
We intend to replace the one we have as soon as we receive our tax refund but do not want to spend more than about $500. TOTAL because it's only entertainment for us.
Any thoughts?
Thanks a bunch :)

I understand that computers don't make decisions on a human level.

However, they do performs tasks and use energy in much the same way as simple lifeforms do. They are given their programming and then when in operation, they perform their programming. It's the same as when singled cell organisms do what their DNA tells them to do.

The only difference would be replication and survival. Computers aren't programmed to ensure their survival. If they were, wouldn't they be alive in some sense?

How hard is it to switch from using a PC for the past, lets say 10 years to a MAC? I have never used a MAC before, I have always been interested in using one, but just didn't want to bother with the unfamiliaralities of the hardware and software. So I guess my question is, how are the two products alike, what are the major differences and is it easy to switch over?

Just so you know I mainly use my computer for photo and video editing and the "internet".

Got a new cpu built about 6mths ago, it ran great/quiet. Recently it's got a little noisey, not bad... also had 'overclocking warnings' upon turning it on... I'm wondering if the fans clogged up - and would it be wise to use a vacuum on it?

i went to boot up my old cpmaq amarda laptop and was amazed to see the message"windows cannot find the file ..system ini. windows will now close
as the laptop hasnt got a internal cd-rom drive(bootable cd-rom) so a xp installation is out the order(its 98se at the moment)
could i use a windows 98 start up disk to sort the system ini file problem or could i use the 6 floppy discs downloaded from microsoft.com to do a xp install for a computer without a bootable device
the main problem being is as the main cd-rom is attached by pcmcia, unless there is a start up disc with pcmcia support i wont get started
what would you recommend?

I recently accidentally uninstalled my AVG antivirus software. A friend advised me to just use system restore to get it back - and it did. My question is: what is happening to all these programs that you uninstall, are they all still lurking somewhere on your HD or what? Just curious
