i went to boot up my old cpmaq amarda laptop and was amazed to see the message"windows cannot find the file ..system ini. windows will now close
as the laptop hasnt got a internal cd-rom drive(bootable cd-rom) so a xp installation is out the order(its 98se at the moment)
could i use a windows 98 start up disk to sort the system ini file problem or could i use the 6 floppy discs downloaded from microsoft.com to do a xp install for a computer without a bootable device
the main problem being is as the main cd-rom is attached by pcmcia, unless there is a start up disc with pcmcia support i wont get started
what would you recommend?

for some reason i started up 3 old windows 98 comps a week ago to find the same problem (they worked a year ago).

I would not recommend downloading XP on a floppy because floppies hold, what, about 2 MB of data and XP is about 5,120MB or 5 GB (I think). You may want to get a dvd of it. I recommend just getting a new computer with Vista or XP.

You could use the Windows 98 start up disk to do a safe boot of the system which would allow you to go in and repair the system ini file, do a search for system*.* within search. The windows XP floppy disks will put in the necessary drivers for PCMIA devices which would allow you to install XP, just not sure whether your old laptop is up to the necessary spec. Make sure your optical drive is connected before using the XP floppy disks.
