Disk formatting is the process of preparing a "hard disk" or other storage medium for use, including setting up an empty file system.

Erasing is simply that .... & refers to deleting files or data on a storage device.
It does not affect the device itself nor does it alter it in any way.

In computer terms, the words "Erase" or "Delete" are meant to erase or delete certain files in the "Local Disk" or "Partition". While the word "Format" is meant to erase or delete all files and contents of a "Local Disk" or "Partition" at once.
