Monitors

I am using a VGA monitor, which works fine on my ATI Radeon 7500. I got a new monitor, with DVI connection. I get no output through my DVI port

I have tried the following
-the monitor works, used it on a different PC
-used a DVI-VGA converter, not working with VGA monitor.
-If I attempted dual screen, I could never enable two screens.
-Installing ATI Hydravision and ATI Catalyst. :-(
-Reinstall Windows, no good.

What is wrong with thmy PC. Is it the graphics card, BIOS?

PC - AMI BIOS 1999, AMD 800Mhz PC, 64MB ATI Radeon 7500, 40GB HDD, 512MB RAM

(Please note that I will NOT risk flashing my BIOS)

I'm buying a new laptop with windows vista, so I want adequate graphics. Is a XGA monitor with a 256MB graphics card ok, or I'm wasting the card's power because of the XGA (and not SXGA)?

Is a 128 graphics card still deliver solid graphics?

I have a geforce 5700 FX with DVI, VGA, and S-video output. The VGA output is currently being used for my monitor. I found an S-video cable and I thought I could connect it to my dvr, and hence my tv, but nothing happens when I do so.

do I need to enable the S-video output port with some software setting?

I have an gateway fpd1830 Moniter. Until recently it worked fine, but for the last week or so, it turns on OK and displays the usual picture for about a second, but then goes blank. I cannot get any picture to show from then on. If I turn it off then on again, it shows a picture for about a second again before going blank.
how do i fix it?

I reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled windows, drivers, etc.. now I only have 640x480 (16 bit) pixels. I have tried to change it, but it will not move. I went to trouble shoot to change my monitor, but the only monitor listed is the default monitor and it will not let me drop down any other choices.
