Some computer cases -mostly old ones- have power sources with an output designed to connect the monitor there. If this was your case, that would make your monitor turn off when your pc isn't working (no power source on: no power). So, logically, you should have now your monitor connected to a regular, independent power source. Otherwise, I can't think of anything that would cause this.

Check the cable connection and quality, it may have went bad.
