The theory is that CRT emits more ‘harmful rays’ due to florescence from the screen, whilst an LCD does not emit these rays. The major problem is normally the proximity from the CRT screen as we are very close to a CRT then an LCD. Some research on this has proved that CRT strains the eyes more than LCD, but I would suggest not more than 2 hours in front of a CRT at a stretch, take a short break every 2 hours, do some eye exercises, such as focusing on a far away object(NOT on your screen) for about 5 minutes for every 5 hours and roll you eyes around as often as possible. In addition, keep the brightness of the screen to as low as possible.

CRT monitors are far superior than LCD's. Though the look and feel of LCD appeals more to the consumer, the color and brightness accuracy is way off. You won't see any professional graphic artists using LCD's. The color accuracy is important to them. A high-end CRT will out-perform a LCD, however, if you are only using your computer for entertainment an non-professional use, go with the LCD. I want to add one more thing - LCD monitors are made for ONE resolution only. If you set the resolution below or above the designed setting, the picture quality will be horrible. A CRT monitor is designed to support all resolutions and refresh rates.

There is nothing that can be considered proof yet but many agree that CRT monitors can be damaging for your eyesight, especially due to the very low levels of radiation and other dangers that are only limited to this type of monitor.
Look for and LCD with a great contrast ratio at least 4000 to 1.

CRTs can cause eyestrain if theyre set to the wrong refresh rate but it's usually noticable on scren with wavey horizontal lines..
I look at computer screen pretty much constantly.. A few tips I got from my optician..
- Keep the room well lit
- Change the screen colours to something more high contrast (ALT+SHIFT+PrintScreen in windows)
Best of all though and this has helped me
Be concious of how long your staring at the screen for.. Every 15-20 minutes or so take a break, lean back in your chair and stare out the window/around the room for a few seconds.. You can actually feel your eyes relax.

Yes in fact they might be, CRTs cause eyestrain. LCDs are much better for your eyes, so I would definately recommend them if the CRT is bothering you. Lastly, if the anyone else answering this question says the word radiation, just stop reading and click the thumbs down, nothing but a myth.

If you have the refresh set to 85Hz or higher, then no. If you have the refresh set to 60Hz, then yes. The high refresh rate tricks the eyes into seeing a solid image. The lower refresh rate has flicker that strains the eyes.
Just look for reviews on monitors to find the truth.

LCD are considered best, but the information on them may not be complete enough to say for sure.

yes they do.
it all depends on your screen refresh rate.
it should be at least 75Hz.
be careful though, if you set a monitor refresh rate too high, you monitor might get damaged.
