Greetings to all ,

I wish to get a laptop (have never had one thus my knowledge is 0) so I would like to get some information before getting one . So here are some of the brands I was thinking : a HP or Dell laptop .

My needs are basically for surfing the net , watching videos , hearing music , must be durable and I also have a ZD screen recorder which I will need to install.

Is there any things I need to be aware of when buying. does it get hot easily (if so i was thinking of using my fan and place it directly at it, is that advisable ? ) and whats this dual core , proccessor which I often see it on the laptops specs.

Many thks for your help . Greatly appreciated it

Hello,

Im in the process of buying a laptop, and im a little bit picky on the weight (I know that sounds fussy, but im sure everyone would like a lite laptop!)

Its a SONY vaio and it weighs 2.5kg - Is this normal for a laptop? Is it on the liter or heavier weigh of average laptops?

Thanks

My friend got an older laptop from a relative today, a Dell Latitude running Windows 98 se. It had worked fine for a while. He was using it to type a paper today, and walked away from it for a second. The computer went into standby, and when he moved the mouse to bring it out, it prompted him to register for Windows, and for an OEM. It has been registered for years. Why would it suddenly ask for the info? It was a refurbished laptop, so he doesn't even have the number. What can we do to be able to use it again, short of putting another copy of Windows in? Thanks!

Laptop was recently "dropped" opened to see if anything loose, like the hard drive. seems ok. Thought I might have a loose connection for HD. Besides plugging into the slot on the mother board is there a smaller connecter that attaches to it?

I'm having problems getting my laptop battery to last more than an hour while the machine is not plugged in.... it's making it entirely a waste to even try to take notes in school... All I need to do is run MS Word and possibly Adobe Acrobat. My config and settings are below. Can someone help with some settings or a solution that will extend battery power? My meter will initially show 3 hours of power left but that decreases exponentially and only last an hour at the most... I generally disable the radio on my internal Intel wireless card to avoid processing cycles used to unneeded wireless access. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I will be open to setting up new Windows Profiles if necessary and it doesn't screw up my desktop and settings in the profile I use most often... Thanks for the help!! Brett

Config: Inspiron 9300
Pentium M 2.13 ghz, 533 FSB
2 gig RAM, 533 FSB dual inline module
256 mg NVidia 9300
set at 1900x1200 dpi in 32bit true color
Dell Lithium 9 Cell 11.1v

My cd drive broke or blew up a few weeks ago for reasons unknown. Here's what Windows keeps telling me:

"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device."

Ok, so I did the trouble shoot, tryed uninstalling and reinstalling (wasn't too sure if I had to restart my computer afterwards) the drivers, with no luck still. Now I feel I must buy a replacement. So I guess my question is, what's the best place to go to get a replacement and have it installed as well?? For a decent price at least...

thanks for your answers =D

My laptop's internal video card cannot handle wide screen (IBM T21), but I have a widescreen monitor that has resolution 1680x1050 (wsxga). I do not want my screen stretched as it currently is.

I have a docking station that fits a PCI card, but is limited to half size card (6.9" Length). To clarify, the card cannot extend very far past the pins.
