Hello,

Im in the process of buying a laptop, and im a little bit picky on the weight (I know that sounds fussy, but im sure everyone would like a lite laptop!)

Its a SONY vaio and it weighs 2.5kg - Is this normal for a laptop? Is it on the liter or heavier weigh of average laptops?

Thanks

That sounds pretty much all right for a general purpose laptop computer.

You can get lighter computers but when you go below 2 kg (or even a bit above) you have to make some compromises (like crappy keyboard, even lower power components, etc) while above 3 kg tends to be way too heavy.

If you can pick one up with a battery installed in it before you buy (might be hard, stores usually don't leave batteries in laptops on display) then you'd get a good idea of how heavy it is.

I've used a laptop that was 3.1 kg and it was light enough to carry around a lot (I now have a lighter one though).

If you are going to be carrying it around all day get the lightest possible, if you will only carry it occasionally then heavier doesn't really matter.
Sony's are a very good brand and the Vaio (I have had mine for over 5 years) are great.

Carry a 2.5kg bag of carrots or potatoes in a back pack for a little while, sounds funny but it will give you a good idea about your own limits.

Happy Shopping

2.5Kg is run of the mill for a laptop. The typical used to be around the 2Kg mark but they've got laptop bloat... what you get for a 15" screen and integrated DVD drive...

I use a Compaq NC4010... 1.5Kg and a 1.6GHz CPU but only a 12.1 inch (1024x768) screen and no integrated DVD. It's fine and the 1Kg saving on my back is great.

No. 2.5kg is normal weight. Happy shoping.

That is actually lighter than most on the market today. It converts out to a little over 5 lbs. and most are 6.0 to 6.8.

That's a little heavy, although not outrageously so.
