A regular inverter will work, but HP may have an automotive charger for your laptop. That would be cheaper and more efficient.

I use a regular inverter that you plug into your cigarette lighter or power port. Figure out how much power your laptop needs and get an inverter at least twice as large. I use a 200 watt unit to charge camera batteries and run a laptop but not at the same time.

HP has a charger that you can order from them. I bought a charger from Circuit City that will work in a car, airplane ( using 12 volt lighter ) or electrical outlet and is universal ( came with different adapters to fit almost all applications). Cost was much less than the one from my lap top manufacturer. I would price from several different sources like Fry's Electronics, Best Buy etc. for best deal. A charger built for a computer battery is the safest way to charge your battery.
Hope this helps
