This is a dv5000 series HP laptop and I'm selling it after using for a year and so. I want to DELETE everything for good as I don't want the person I'm selling it will try to recover data. I'm concerned to use the "seagate zero fill" utility as I'm afraid it'll delete something useful for my laptop to be recognized by the restore cd, because I've experienced similar problems in the past. What should I do to simply recover my actual and old (already deleted by windows) data in a safe way? I have to do it this night. Thank you very much for any useful information you'll provide me.

Dell Inspiron 2200 is overheating?
I have a Dell Inspiron 2200 and it keeps shutting off randomly. The first time it shuts off after about 20 or 30 minutes after start up. The consecutive times are after about 5 minutes. Here are the steps I have taken to figure out the problems
1. Downloaded speedfan and say that fan1 was running at about 4300-4700 rpm and HD0 is 34C and temp1 is about 84C. Also fan2 and 3 are at 922 rpm.Although I assume it is overheating, I wanted to add that it isn't actually hot to the touch
2. called dell tech support. My warrenty is out but she said she would run diagnostic and see what the prob was. We ran diagnostic til the computer shut off halfway through. She said it appeared the fan was overheating.
3. Bought a targus chill mat butit didn't help
then I ran diagnostic and the only thing it said was the the AC adapter was bad. COuld that be shutting it down? THe AC adapter is for a laptop but not for The inspiron itself. should I buy a dell charger?

I have my new laptop (with windows vista home premium) and I want to try to run a version of Linux. If I run Linux what happens to my old OS? Is there any specific requirements for having myself running Linux? Do I need any special keys on my comp? I have always wanted to run Linux. Sorry if this is a noobish question.

i am probably talking the basic spec computers but why are laptops coming down in price?

looking in Asda they have a brand new Acer laptop £275
with windows Vista, wireless enabled good sized hardrive etc etc.

My theory is that there a lot of products on the market now that will access the internet ie :- pda's, mobile phones etc etc and computers are now competing against these items if people only want to access the internet and nothing else.

Ok it is a Dell Inspiron 6000. Moble Pentium M Processor @ 1.5GH, 768MB of DDR 2 ram, windows xp pro SP2.

The laptop will not power on from the battery at all, even if battery is fully charged. Pluged in from a new A/C wall plug, it will power on, and flash the LED's, but nothing on the screen, and in about 1.5 seconds or less, powers off itself every time. I did spill soda on it last night, but took it apart and cleaned it verry well, but still no boot. No POST or windows xp splash screen, nothing. Any ideas?
