Chances are it is the adapter causing your problem.
NEVER use an adapter that didn't come with your machine.
The adapter was designed to use the proper voltage, and amps for that particular machine. the use of anything else can damage your machine.

Ok, I had a simiular problem with my Dell Inspiron 6000 last year. But before it shut down, I got it fixed. What was happining with mine is it would get really loud after about 10-20 min. Then it would start acting funny, that is when I shut it off myself before it became a problem. What I did is brought it to a computer repair shop, and just asked them to take it apart and clean it verry well. Most likley it is just a build-up of dust and animal fur, cig smoke, really anything like that. Mainly dust though. Not bad to, like a two day or one day ammount of work, and only cost like $35 or so. You should get this done about once a year for good laptop maintenence. I am a certified PC desktop tech, and have been learning laptop maintenence latley, and now do this job myself. I would also suggest NOT USING your laptop until you get it cleaned. Your fans are working fine, they are spinning so all is good, just working to hard. Get it cleaned and all will be good!

Interesting that you saved the part about the AC adapter not being the proper one for the laptop! They are not all universal, and they have different voltage and current ratings that must be matched to your system.
If you run a search for your computer model you can come up with the right adapter for your system.
You absolutely must have the right power going into your computer or you risk serious or permanent damage.

All the things you did were good. Buying the correct adapter may help as well. I actually fix dell computers as my living....one thing I find in common is the heat sinks become clogged with dust and need to be blown out. However unless you are comfortable taking your laptop apart you may not be able to do this.

the adapter could be the wrong voltage ==or wrong ampreage..check out a dell product..if not have the fan replaces and the cpu heatsink fins cleaned..sometimes
dust gets in the fins and clogs them== this stops the cpu from cooling off=causing it to overheat shutting down the motherboard to protect the cpu from burning out...bob

Interesting information here.

Personal note: If you watch the ads in your Sunday paper, you can pickup a deal. I purchased an Antec laptop cooler for $9.99 after rebates (which I did get).

You better contact Dell about this issue. Maybe you have a warranty and they can fix it.
