Go with Toshiba or HP or Compaq.
Dell and Sony stink. Last spring, Dell & Sony featured exploding batteries.
But if your really want reliability, then get a DESKTOP. Laptops do break, get stolen, and are expensive to upgrade.
Good luck and Happy Computing!

I really enjoy listening to Dan continually bring up this exploding battery thing to bash Dell and Sony. Then of course he turns around and yells about how great Toshiba is. Guess what, they used the same batteries and had the same problems, and none of the three use the batteries anymore. Just ridiculous answer on his part.
Really all four of those you listed are good, you won't go wrong with any of them, although you may have to wait a while to get a Dell, they are having trouble with backorders right now. Lenovo is very very good quality, even though a lot of people on here seem to not have heard of them or no very little about them.

well really the 1st ?? I always ask is what are you expecting from the laptop performance wise or what do you plan to do with it.... ex: gaming, video editing, music, docs net surfing
all of these things come into factor especially when you are looking at buying a laptop. Me personally Toshiba or HP would be my choice.
I have a toshiba that has been running now for about 4 yrs no joke, just added more RAM and a Bigger HD and it works great for my daughter to do homework or surf the net.

I've had Dell and Toshiba, both of them have worked great for me. I'm an architect and I carry them with me to the office, construction sites, everywhere. They are not as delicate as Sony or Lenovo.
My Dell laptop is 3 years old and it works like new.
Just make sure the laptop you choose fit your demands and that will be the right laptop for you.

Since you are an engineer I would opt for the mobile workstations from dell (specifically the precision) or HP.
I would choose the workstations from dell or HP because they come with the nvidia quadro graphics card, which is optimized for use with design software (CAD, solidEdge, solidWorks,CosmosWorks, etc). They are also usually better built than their consumer notebooks.
The workstations are built with the professional (i.e. engineers, architects, etc.) in mind. You can't go wrong with either the Dell or HP.
I would personally opt for the Dell, but only because you can customize it online, HP/Compaq you can't.
Hope this helps.
