The 'smaller connection' is the power connection. if that is out, you will not get anything other than what you have. No power - no drive seen by the BIOS.
Yes, you CAN destroy a HD, even a laptop HD with a drop - especially if the laptop HD is accessing the data, but HDs designed for laptops are designed to regularly 'park' the heads in a safe place between accesses to help prevent this kind of head crash - which is why they are slower than ones designed for desktops.

Hard Drives do not deal well with impacts. You are getting this message because the Hard Drive is not working properly any more. But you may have other issues. You can find that out by inserting your Operating System disk into the CD or DVD drive and if it boots to the CD or DVD as the case may be then you know for sure that you need a new hard drive. If it still does not respond you may have more damage than you previously thought. And no there is only one place that the Hard Drive can connect to.

The most likely cause is a 'head crash'. Literally, the read heads of your HDD crashed down on the disk surface. It happens when a laptop is dropped while it is on, unless you own a Lenovo Thinkpad T-series laptop that automatically parks the head when it detects it's falling.
Buy a new hard disk, re-install Windows and start all over. I know. It sucks!

Sorry, your hard drive dropped dead. The impact damaged it. Same thing happened to my HDD on a desktop. A kid stepped on top of my minitower. While stepping down, the PC tilted, then bang. Dead HDD!

Take HDD out and use as external drive with another PC to backup files, then reinstall Windows.

just the power cord and a small 4 prong plug in

That message usually appears when the BIOS can't find anything to boot (hard drive, CD-ROM, etc.). In this case, it's most likely your hard drive.
