Add-ons - December 2006

Okay...here goes...when I plug in my external hard drive, Windows XP automatically recognizes and installs it, but the icon never appears in the My comuter window. The computer recognizes its presence in every obvious way but I can't view my files on the drive. I have tried this on multiple computers and have even taken it to a technician. Furthermore, he can see that there is data on the device. I think he's trying to get a few bucks from me so I don't really trust his advice. He says its either the enclosure that is causing the problem or he will need to backup the data on to a CD or another hard drive. The product is void of warranty so I have no other option but to do it myself or pay $100. And that's a lot of money to pay around Christmas time. Thank you so much in advance.

Is there one that can be used even though the PC may be turned off? Preferably, i'd like to monitor the activity via my laptop? Any surveillance gurus out there that can guide in the right direction?

I bought a flash drive for my mother for Christmas. I just realized that one of the computers she uses, which is really old, doesn't have any USB slots. Is all hope lost for using the flash drive on this computer or is there some sort of device I can buy? The only slots I see are comm ports. Maybe a comm port to USB adapter? Would that even work? Does it exist? Any help is appreciated! Thanks.

well ive heard that most graphics card have to share their memory with the ram of your computer? and that the graphics card does not have its own memory thus making your ram lower and computer slower?
if this is the case how do i know if a graphics card is like that. is it ddr2 or ddr3 or something else?

I'm planning on burning almost 50 CD's. I'm using 1 writer and I'm worried that I'll damage it or something if i burn the Cd's non-stop. Is this true? If so what can I do?

I am just looking for an AGP which just support most popular games, not the performance. I have no idea about today's games. nvidia Geforce 4:64 MB is good I know. Is ATI Radeon 64MB better than this for gaming. Tell about Asus Geforce Fx5200 , Gigabyte Geforce, Gigabyte radeon if you wish.

Is there a USB device that will allow me to attach external hard drives to my system without messing with the master/slave and all that? If so, what would you recomend?

I want to get old pictures from my old drives in my old systems with minimal effort, but also have the means to transport large amounts of data physically.

Apparently, you can operate the computer's pointer function by moving the mouse through the air in the desired direction. I am interested, as I am looking for something like that for my family room where I don't really have a table and would use the computer from my couch.

I have 256 MB RAM & i'm planning to buy an AGP card.
I want to know if an AGP card has its own memory.

Like suppose i buy a 64 MB AGP card (thats enuff 4 me as i only play FIFA). Then will it use 64 MB of my RAM? Pls answer.

I have a pentium 4, 2.4 GH and i have a dvd player and cd-rw. Recently we bought a dvd-rw, LG GSA H10N and we try to install it, but my pc starts very slow and we cant install the dvd, is like my computer gone crazy quen we connect the dvd, so i think we could change the cd-rw por dvd-rw, bu we cant either that form, so please, somebody could help us? I've already got a bluetooth dongle which i use to connect my phone to the pc.

If i buy a bluetooth wireless keyboard and mouse can they use the same dongle to connect to the pc or will i need another one.

The problem is i've already used all my usb ports and i'm running several usb hubs to get more usb ports (18 ports in total now) and i don't want things to slow down by adding another USB device if i don't need to.

Also is a bluetooth wireless better for a wireless keyboard i.e range and line of sight.
