If I were to buy an external hard disk and work on my graphic projects, I would have more space to work with. But how about the speed, will it be just as slow?

Probably slower. External disks usually connect by USB or firewire, much slower that EIDE or SATA.

If you are looking for performance, look at a 10,000 rpm disk with a big memory buffer. Check out Western Digital's Raptor X 150 GB, 1.5 GB/sec SATA drive.

If you are not working on the big graphic file on the external HDD, you will have little issue.

But you have intention to do graphic design on a file location on the external HDD. Keep is small and min require in continous saving to the external drive. It will slow the system down.

USB 2.0 is pretty quick but you will only be able to go as fast as your bus speed. A memory upgrade may be what you need also. "PEACE" Also a stronger CPU
