Is there one that can be used even though the PC may be turned off? Preferably, i'd like to monitor the activity via my laptop? Any surveillance gurus out there that can guide in the right direction?

Do you have a wireless network? I use the Linksys WVC54GC wireless video camera on one of my networks and I'm very happy with it. My only complaint is that it doesn't have night vision like a baby monitor. If you have a wireless network running, by all means use this camera, it's easy to use and you won't need to leave your PC powered up like you said because the camera has its own built-in web server. Plus, you can set up motion detection and only have it record the times when there is motion. You can even have it email you an .AVI video clip of the motion it detected, pretty cool. Should cost you about $110-120 at a BestBuy or CompUSA. If you don't have a wireless network and want to set one up (it's easy) then go with the Linksys WRT54G. If you don't want a WLAN, you have other answers above to review...

Just tape your web cam into the corner of the room but think you will need extention cordto get the camera cord long enough to move the laptop into the other room. You can get USB extentions at your local computer stores. Baby monitors only cost about 30 dollars and would be your best choice.
