I have Vista HP notebook, I connected it with a XP desktop, with a RJ-45 cable, using Ping command to ping computer names, but they were not talking at all. I just want to share files between them, not sharing internet connection. Why?

I would like to share the one printer we have on both, and be able to go on the internet on both at the same time.
I'd like an answer in plain english please, as I don't speak computer techno, but I don't want to not get all the info, so I do have a friend who can translate if needed.
I am concerned with the Vista controversy as I am not able to load a lot of my programs on the Vista computer, (including the printer driver), and wonder if I will be able to access them through the other computer. If I can then share and transfer files, anything I need to print, I can share with the non-Vista computer.
I am on dial-up, as we cant get cable internet here, and don't need anything wireless in this configuration unless necessary.
I did search "Answer's", but again, I'm not that comp. litterate, and was not sure I understood what I was reading.
Thank you

If someone has an unsecure Wi-Fi signal, can someone make their printer print?

Lets say that my neighbor has wireless internet thru a D-link router. It is not secured, meaning if I turn on my laptop, I can pick up his wireless signal and get internet. Could I print something on his printer without his permision. Maybe like a note saying "You should really secure this Wi-Fi connection you have to keep people from piggybacking on your service. Could it be done?

Everytime it rains or storms just a little bit, my internet does not work. When I try to navigate the web during a storm; I get "page cannot be displayed" on the browser and my DSL light goes out on my Speedstream router. We have contacted our ISP, Windstream, about this but they say there is something wrong with our end. Does anyone else have this problem? What do you guys think??

At the moment, I have my PC running off a router upstairs. The walls in my house are quite thin. Due to the need for more space upstairs, I want to put my desktop downstairs. I am also runnning two laptops wirelessly off the router which also connect to the router wirelessly upstairs. Would moving the router downstairs reduce wireless signal quality?

Ok, Heres the problem. I have a HP WLAN 54g W450 Network mini pci card in my laptop. I got this card off of a computer that shorted out. Now this card works great when I am 2 to 3 feet away from the wireless router ( I have tried linksys and microsoft wireless g and b), but as soon as I am like say...5-8 feet I have little or no signal. Now I have a WAP in my bedroom which is roughly 15-20 feet away and i have great signal, so I know its not an interference issue. I also turned off the wap and that did nothing for the adapter. Do you think it could be just that the hardware is faulty or is there a way to boost these cards? I can't find much info on them, let alone a firmware update. Any help would be greatly appreciated! - computer is a compaq presario 2190us 2.4ghz 650 +/- ram.....Built in 10/100 ethernet card
