You absolutely can. You can't use a standard RJ-45 cable (actually the RJ-45 referes to the cable ends, the cable is called a CAT5 cable). You need to have a cross over cable. A standard cable (aka strait through cable) uses the same wire configuration on both ends. A cross over cable flips the input and output wires so that one end's input is the other end's output and visa-versa.
Once you connect the computers together with a cross over cable, you have to setup the IP addresses manually. Normally there is a built in system called DHCP that automatically assigns IP address information to your computer. A DSL modem, Cable modem and routers all come with DHCP built into them. In the situation you are dealing with, you won't have that option, so you must do this part manually. Once you find the TCP/IP properties, you'll need to set each computer to use a different IP address. 10.0.0.x and 192.168.x.x ranges are used for internal networks like you are talking about. Each computer needs the same subnet mask also. After you do that, you will be ready to transfer files.

you have some selections. the least confusing way is to get a crossover cable and connect the pcs by using way of the ethernet ports. A crossover cable is quite like a widespread Ethernet cable different than that the order of the wires on the top piece are reversed you additionally could have the two pcs hook up with an identical on the spot community. In the two case, you will could make the two pcs area of an identical "workgroup" with the intention to ascertain one yet another and share records. outstanding-click on "My laptop" and choose "properties". The elect the "laptop call" tab and alter the workgroup call. To share a folder, outstanding click on the folder, decide for properties and then the "sharing" tab and choose to share the folder

If the Cat5 cable is a crossover cable you can do this. If the Cat5 cable you have is a patch cord, no. If you have a wired or wireless router already you could just turn on file and printer sharing on both systems and then create shared folders on both systems.

because they need something to mediate between them, they need some sort of Local Area Network between them, your question should more correctly say "how might i set up a local area network to connect my desktop and laptop" at which point, almost any kid who has had a LAN party (with video games) can tell you that
