Haha if i was to grade all you people answering the questions.. everyone would have fail..
Speed is a misleading concept .. There is no such thing as whats the fastest internet because if u compare a 10mbps line and a 100mbps line, if you are only transmitting about 6mpbs a second then both lines would run the same right? so they run at the same speed dont they? Put it like this.. if you have two water pipes, one as big as your head and the other is as big as your index finger, if the water coming through is very tiny, both pipes will run at the same speed.
The question you need to ask is whats the biggest pipe i can receive for home, business etc? Throughput is the amount of data tranmitted at a given time. This way if you want send large chunks of data then you have a big enough pipe to do so.
Technologies like Fiber optic networks can transmit unlimited about of data but we dont have equipment built to take advantage of that.
So next time your ISP tells you oh you will be downloading at 3mpbs.. you can slap them for selling wrong information. There is no way in hell you can get that much data across unless the most ideal of all situations didnt happen.
Hope you guys get my point now. Look for my company soon: Finical IT

Generally cable Internet (like Comcast) is faster then DSL phone Internet (like Verizon) because the type of physical "cable" used by cable Internet is able to carry more traffic at a faster speed then the line the phone companies use. But the cable Internet's speed can go up and down depending on the time of day and the number of people using it (you share your line with lots of people), and is less secure (again because you share the line), while DSL remains more constant in its speed and is more secure because you are the only person on your line. DSL is also cheaper then cable, plus usually cable requires you too also have cable TV to get cable Internet. That can more then triple the price of cable Internet compares to DSL. So you have to way the price, the speed, the security, and the availibility (not all places have both) and then make your own decision.

What part of the world? What part of the country? Korea is running close to 100 mb. Japan is 50 mb. In America, the range is from 1.5-8mb. Comcast with speed boost (8mb) is generally faster than the phone company (6mb).
Comcast also has better upload speeds than DSL (the phone company).

Verizon FIOS have unlimited capacity for bandwidth. They could go into the Gbps with that, however they currently limit it to similar speeds as Comcast ~ 8Mbps down/~1Mbps up.
Comcast is ultimately limited by their copper infrastructure. FIOS is all fiber optic.
The core of the Internet runs on links of about 10Gbps currently. You don't want the people feeding into the core to overwhelm it.
