when im in my house or go to a store i see in my wi-fi networks things like 2WIRE249 or just 2WIRE with a 3 digit number after it and it wont let me connect to it because its encrypted any idea what it is???

i heard my city is putting up wi-fi for all the ppl that live here (sacramento CA) maybe thats it they said it will cover all the city in about 2 years and its supposed to be free T1

it will be encrypted because they are private internet connection, a company would not want to give network access to anybody who walks past with a wifi enabled device, neither would a home user

These are other wireless networks in the area that the owner has enabled wireless security on to keep neighbors from stealing there internet bandwidth.

It is as it says. An encrypted wi-fi site with either a WEP or WAP code...Look at this.

that would be another person's wireless access point .
wireless access point ( is where someone links to access the internet) basically it is just someone elses internet connection :) hope this helps

its a 2wire router signal and if you can decrypt it you would be using there network, wich is illegal. aka free internet.
