I have an older laptop, a Compaq Armada m700, and a couple years ago it stopped running the desktop.In other words, it could start and run, but it would get to the desktop or somewhere in the booting phase and just stop working. I don't have an install disk for it, so I can't wipe it.

Well, since then I have gotten a WinXP laptop and am using that for Games and such, but I believe that it is a software problem and not a hardware issue. So, I thought maybe I could install a version of Linux on it to give it new life.
I guess what I'm really asking is Can I install Linux on the laptop and use it instead of 98, even though 98 doesn't work? (Kind of install Linux from a disk like an install disk)

I want to use my own ASP.NET webserver via my PC's

current topology:
modem->router->switch
I need more ports, so do I just tag another switch onto the switch, or go in parallel with the router?
Goal: max speed transfer.
The switches are gigabit, the router is megabit.

I need help RE-DOING my home page of my site! I am in a movie class and I am working on a presentation that is requiring to take a small clip from a movie and put it into a powerpoint document. I have the original movie in dvd format. How can I cut out this clip from the movie and insert it into a powerpoint document?

First off I'd like to say that I'm really greatful for any help that I can get, this is a problem that I've been having for over a year now. I have an Hp Paviliona 1230n pc. The mouse that came with the computer worked fine for a few months, then all of a sudden it froze, and it never worked again. I then got an HP Deluxe Optical mouse and it to worked fine for a few months, but then it started to freeze up too. I would be on the internet or opening files, and it would freeze. Sometimes I could get it to move again if I just waited for a minute other times I'd have to unplug the usb cord then plug it back in. It's been doing this for a year now. I then got a logitech wireless laser mouse, and it worked fine for a few weeks, but now it freezes too, about every other second. I switched back to the optical mouse and it's been doing what it always does. I checked usb hub, and different things but it still does it. Also a message pops up saying that the usb has malfunctioned. Please Help.

I'm comparing two laptops (the Toshiba Satellite 15.4" Widescreen Notebook PC (A215-S4807)@$780 and the Toshiba Satellite 15.4" Widescreen Notebook PC (A215-S4697)@$600). They differ in price by about $180. I can put in another Gig of RAM into the first one for $50. The second one is .20Ghz faster and has a webcam. Which one should I get?

Sometimes when I start my laptop (with Windows Vista), a message window comes up and says "Windows Explorer failed to start" -or something similar. Then my desktop screen won't appear, making me have to restart my computer.
Other times another window comes up and says "COM Surrogate" failed to start.

Is there any way how I can fix these problems. I have a Toshiba laptop that I just got.

I have a laptop and a mouse coonected. This morning my mouse was working just as normal. All of a sudden it just stopped. I checked the port it is plugged into- it is fine. I took the ball out and put it back-still nothing. Any suggestions? I really like my scroll button! :) THANKS!

I have been looking after a laptop which is shortly going to be returned to its owner. The person is not a friend of mine, he does not know me at all, he owes money to my husband, so i dont know if he is trustworthy.

ANyway, I have been using the laptop to purchase home shopping from Tescos, and i also used it to do online banking - because my own computer was not working.

Can he access my details and steal my identity/get my bank details? I phoned my bank and they said he cannot access my details because both Tescos and my bank have secure sites. However i am sure some TV programmes like Watchdog etc advised people to erase their hard disks before letting go of their home computers because some people's details have been accessed even from these so-called secure sites.

Please advise.

PS .. i am Nigerian and so is he!! i love my people but i know that they are good at scamming.
