My PC is currently running on dual channel with 2x 256 ram. Planning to upgrade it with 1x 1gig ram. I know if I put that one ram stick in it won't run on dual channel anymore. So does dual channel make that much of a difference or is more ram better?

I'm fighting over getting an Apple notebook or not. I just don't know if Vista is as big a failure as XP.

I don't print every day. I have had really terrible problems with Epson inkjet printers lasting barely a year and then printing with streaks, or cartidges mysteriously "expiring" when they seem full.

I just want a printer that works when I want it. That doesn't spend a full minute making whirring sounds. That doesn't have insane supply burn-rates. That just prints, you know?

What kind of printer should I be looking at? It doesn't seem like any printers out there nowadays are worth a darn.

Ok.. I need help from all you windows xp experts

Background info: I have a computer, windows xp prof. Two Admin accounts, both password protected are on it. There is NO guest account. Whoever uses the computer must know either password. Me and my brother are both the admins. My mom is computer stupid.

Situation:

Because of an IDIOT situation my brother got into (dangerous myspace messages that my mom found out about offline), my dad forced my mom (parents separated) to hire someone to come and make a master password on our computer. I personally don’t want it to happen, but it wont bother me too much if it did. I feel, however, that it is unfair that I am the one who cant use the computer (my dad is controlling both of us) when my brother got into trouble on it. Anyway, I am not going to make it easy for some dude to just come in and put a password on our cpu so I have a plan. I am going to completely shut down the computer and when the guy comes he will have to turn it

The other day my Acer laptop of 1.5 years took very long to load up (the windows XP blue line load thing). Then there was a black screen for a long time, then the laptop itself performed a scan on the C: drive, and then when this was done, it said that it 'recovered' some files. Ever since then, my laptop has been running very slow: long time to open programmes etc. But it is slightly faster after one hour or so. Now whenever I turn it on, it takes like 15-20 min to properly load, and also the programmes and all are very slow. What's wrong? Is it the hard-drive?

This may very well be a stupid question I know. Here it goes. I have Wifi provided through my apartment complex. I have two computers that I want to "network" or just file share w/o internet. How can I do this? I have a wifi router but I have no modem or internet to plug into it.

Is there a way to connect my router to the wifi internet and share files that way?

So last week I had CHKDSK complaining about my secondary HDD, but it failed during every attempt to check the drive. I ran SpinRite, which appeared to be unsuccessful (only made it about 4% through and then claimed to need several hundred more hours to finish and had unrecoverable data). However, after rebooting after SpinRite, CHKDSK was able to finish and since then everything seems to be in perfect running order. Running SpinRite now gives the HDD a clean bill of health.

Now, I'm nervous about the future of the drive. It's mostly for storage, nothing too important. I'm going to make a backup DVD for some of the rare music and whatnot, but I'm still worried that it may go wonky again. I can afford a new drive, but money is a little tight. I have a lot of experience with computers, but I've never had a drive seem to be finished but then make a seemingly full recovery. I don't know what to expect.

Anyone have input?
