But it is safe - and also useful and educational. So much safer than many other things they could be doing, in fact. Its far easier to install some parental controls on a computer, than to protect them from the outside world of bullies with knives and drugs, drunk manics in cars, kiddie snatchers, etc...
The internet is used in virtually every workplace, so why not give them a head-start in life? Hey, you're even using it now to ask your question! If you really don't want them to use the internet, then lead by example.

Children can and do figure out how to get passed parental control features. No matter how smart the child is, any child can find themselves in a sticky situation with a pedophile when it comes to the internet. Let's face it, the internet is a pedophile's playground, and they do have a good time.
Children are also likely to become addicted to the computer and may not socialize as much in real life. It is far more important for a child to be playing outdoors with other children. Using a laptop outside is not a good subsititute either!

Well there are a couple reasons, the biggest reason is it gives children power.... hear me out:
The power of the largest reserve of information ever conseved. For better or worse, Licoln, BDSM, basket weaving, global conflict, the works of socrates, hitler, church hill at anyones finger tips.
The power of man kinds most powerful and wide reaching communications network. The power to talk to the worlds most interesting people: Monks, doctors, ex cons, Nasa engineers, other kids, perverts, right wing fundementalist, anarchists atheist.
It's all just information but you don't walk your child to the corner with a book store a coffe shop, a sex store, a kkk recruiting station, and a kids club and say don't look at any thing your not supposed to dear I'll be making dinner, then walk away.
I am not an advocate of scensorship but a childs mind by deffinition is impressionable it should be informed in context and with insight from an adult. Not because your childs best friend stumbled onto a site full of dead bodies and police rape photos.
Conversly you child has a good chance of being able to circumvent any measures you take. I would be very careful how you approach this.

There is actually a way in you wireless router (I assume you have one) to shut the internet off to his IP Address (computers address) at a certain time. I have a Linksys Wireless G router. In Internet Explorer, if you type 192.168.1.1, password is admin, if its has never been changed, there is a setting under one of the tabs to allow/deny access at certain times during the day/night. Works for me :) Basically with no internet, the computer is useless to them and they will shut it off. IE History is useless. It's easily deletable and not really accurate. If you search google for a "keylogger," you can install it privately on his computer and it logs everything he types and goes to. I believe some of them can also periodically email you logs of what he is doing on the pc, soy ou can monitor basically everything. I knew a girl who had a 1 hour time limit on her computer a day. When the time limit was up, the computer was locked and she was off of it. It worked, but her parents were extremely strict with it... Don't be so strict to where it would make him never want o use it again! Technology is a good thing! All you basically want to do is make sure he isn't visiting any bad sites and typing bad things. If he is, these programs can help prove it and you can deal with him accordingly.

The internet not being safe isn't the problem. The problem is that parents are not taking the time to sit down and talk to their children about child predators and pornography on the internet. I'm sure you being a parent would hate if your child would be exposed to these things. Simply enable parental controls and talk with your child.
If most parents would take the time we wouldn't see these horrible reports on the news and in our newspapers.

It's safe as long as you know what they are doing..if you just lock them up in a room by themselves..who knows what they will get "curious" about.
Not only are there predators about but like TV some programing may not be suitable.
Also some kids may do a dare by some other kids and the next thing you know their pic of them nude is floating around the internet.

definitely the main reason is because of sexual predators who can contact your kids through chatting. even through online games like maplestory or something like that, they can end up talking to creeps. also kids can get addicted to the internet and lose a real social life. i think staring at a computer screen for hours can also end in bad eyesight in the future, but i'm not sure about that. oh and yes, they could also stumble across inappropriate sites.
i think that the internet is a wonderful tool for finding information. so i would monitor your kids use of the internet, put a time limit and block inappropriate sites.

- Kids will lose the ability to interact with other kids.
- They need fresh air and exercise.
- They are innocent, and therefore vulnerable - kids know no fear - they don't realize that there are pedophiles and such out there looking to harm them.
- Their computer time should be limited. Adults, also need a break. We tend not to blink when we stare at the screen, therefore the eyes become dry, which can lead to itching for kids - bad news for adults, and worse for older adults. Source of this information is my opthamoligist.
- Last, but not least, because you are the parent, and they are not.

Most of the time its safe, but some web sites contain exploit material, which is something you'll want to keep away from your child. However, there are programs that block kids from visiting bad websites. A good one is "Safe Families We-Blocker Parental Control 2.0.1 build 88" which you can get from

Hope that was helpful!
