My PC is currently running on dual channel with 2x 256 ram. Planning to upgrade it with 1x 1gig ram. I know if I put that one ram stick in it won't run on dual channel anymore. So does dual channel make that much of a difference or is more ram better?

1 Gig of ram is definately better than 2x256MB's of dual channel ram. But when you can get that second stick of 1G dual channel, it'll really fly! Because then you'll be back to dual channel. Check out Hardwaresecrets.com, Memory.

Hi. It's a toss up I think. I run dual 512 DDR 400 and get better benchmarks but no noticeable speed increase. Now dual 1 gigs? That may be faster.

I'm running an older AMD 1.8G Barton processor (I think). It made a huge difference on my PC. So much so that I bought another stick when I upgraded my memory. You can always add to your system later. I also downloaded a memory test program which showed performance difference between the two. It was significant.
